Reasons for the Gap between the Rich and the Poor

Since the reform and opening-up, Chinese people have been enjoying a moderately prosperous life. Every householdpossess more property than before overall, but the gap between the rich and the poor grows wider and wider.

It is demonstrated that the anniversary income per people in rural areas increased from 133.6 Yuan in 1978 to 4140.4 Yuan, about 30 times, in 2007, and in towns and cities it rose from 343.4 to 13785.8, about 40 times.

While theGenie Coefficient, the internationally acknowledged standard for the assessment of the gap between the rich and the poor, has already grown from o.28 in 1978 to 0.48 in 2007, which has surpasses 0.4, the internationally considered warning line for the gap between the rich and the poor.

We can easily come to this conclusion that in China the gap between the rich and the poor has broken the reasonable limitation, which is very unfavorable and even dangerous for the social stability. But why the gap grows so fast?

Dating back to the human history as early as possible, we can see that in primitivesociety, there were no such concepts as richness or poverty, because underthe circumstances of extreme shortage, people shared everything available with others barely for survival, and there was nothing left for their private ownership.

However, with the human’s evolution and the developmentof productivity, apart from the bare necessities for survival, people began to have surplus goods, and naturally they were occupied by the stronger, and thus emerging the gap between the rich and poor. So, I think, the root cause of the gap is the private ownership of social wealth.

In the sphere of the whole world, generally speaking, Africa, with the large area of Sahara desert, and South America, with the huge scale of Amazonvirgin forests, are the most undeveloped. Within a country, areas with different resources naturally deposited have different economicstandards, for example, people inErdos of Mongolia are mostly millionaires due to theirabundance of energy resources mainly the coal, while people in Guizhou province are grossly living under the poverty line because of their shortage of naturalresources.

So it is not difficult to understand that the geographical location exerts a fundamentalinfluence on the richness or poverty of an area. People in an area crammed with various natural resources are usually richer that people in resources-lacked areas.

Moreover, the geographical location cultivates a people’s character, which determines the fortune of a country.Take China and England for example. The ancient Chinese culture originates from the Yellow River, in the north of whose is the vast prairie, the west the huge Gobi Desert, the south the ranges of sky-penetrating mountains, and the east the endless oceans. Therefore,

the Chinese people have to huddle up along the Yellow River without other ways out, which naturally and graduallyshapes theirconservative and enduring character, while the English people facing the mysterious oceans in every direction, forms an open and adventurous disposition. So they are more eager and brave in seeking fortunes and naturally become richer than Chinese people.

In current society, the gap between the rich and the poor mainly refers to the gap between the citizens and the peasants. Through the data I have shown at the very beginning, we can see that the income of the citizens is about three times of the peasants’.So what are the reasons for that phenomenon?

This can be explained by the term of Scissors Gap, the price measurement of the gap between the agricultural and industrial product. In recent years, the price of industrial product is far higher than that of the agricultural product, and it is also in the process of growing. So with equal labor, the citizens get more than the peasants, and thus widening the gap between them.

Another important aspect about the gap between the rich and the poor is the gap among

different undertakings. In the state-owned backbone industries such as petro, electricity, tobacco and so on, the salary is notably higher than that of other industries, and they accumulate a large amount of social wealth, which heavily affects the balanced distribution.

Chiefly speaking, the emergence and enlargement of the above-two-mentioned gaps

fundamentally rely on the imperfect social system such as the unsoundeconomic operation mechanism, the unjusttax system, the unreasonable social security system and so on. To follow up, the unequal competition, the corruption behavior and so on also foster the income gap.

In the point of individual, each person has his special family background. Some people were born with a gold spoon in their mouths, such as the second generation of the rich, while some were born to be poor or disabled. That difference determines their future fate to a certain extent. Besides, each individual’s talent, luck, character, diligence and so on also play significant roles in one’s richness or poverty. So there exists Dell and Jobs who start from scratch and make a fortune, and also someone who gradually becomes bankruptcy.

However, persons with capacity without opportunity are not few in society. Influenced by the traditional Chinese culture likeSmallholder Thinking,Favorable King-subject Thought as China is an ancient agrarian country, Chinese people attach much importance to the patriarchal system, and Chinese society grows to be a kinship society. As a result, in employment, people have different chances on the base of nepotism and familial relationship, thus creating the phenomenon that the rich become richer, while the poor become poorer.

Briefly speaking, the reasons for the gap between the rich and the poor are complicated. The government could narrow it in a degree through various regulations, but It is not easy to eliminate it once for all.

Reasons for the Gap between the Rich and the Poor (outline)

The first paragraph points out the topic directly, and then in the second paragraph, quoting some data to aluminate the situation of the income gap. The third paragraph serves as a transitional paragraph to conclude the second paragraph and to introduce the reasons which will be listed in the following paragraphs.

As for the reasons, firstly, exploring from the history perspective, I dig out the root cause of the income gap as the private ownership of social wealth, which covers the fourth and the fifth paragraph.

Secondly, seeing from the point of geography, materially, I think the natural resources an area naturally deposited is an important factor of the income gap which occupies the sixth and the seventh paragraph; mentally, I imagine the character of a people cultivated by the geographical surroundingsprofoundly influence the richness or poverty which is packed in the eighth paragraph.

Thirdly, focusing on current society, first cite data to target at the gap between the citizens and the peasants in paragraph nine, and in paragraph ten explain the main reason the Scissors Gap. Then bring another gap among different industries into light in paragraph eleven. In paragraph twelve, briefly concludes the former three paragraphs and adds some other elements that impact the two kinds of income gaps.

Fourthly, detecting into the individual’s reasons in paragraph thirteen, and then in paragraph fifteen present the traditions influence on Chinese.

Finally, conclude the whole passage as a paragraph sixteen.
