Reflection on Queen Elizabeth I
Recently, I have read the book, Queen Elizabeth I, which depicts Elizabeth I’ life stories. Through this book, I gain a good knowledge of the Virgin Queen. Surrounded by “ancient”and sad person since her childhood, she grew up serious. Living in a turbulent period, she learned to hide her feelings and keep her heart to herself, from which she benefited for life. “Tenacious virtue overcomes all’’ she once said as a prisoner. After all, her wisdom, together with her advisors’ counsel, created a relatively peaceful period for England people.
One week has passed since I finished the book. I have forgotten the majority of people and things it has mentioned. I used to hate reading books. I thought it was just a waste of time because I forgot quickly about the contents. But now I realize I was totally wrong for misunderstanding the true meaning of reading.
Actually books are not intended to tell us about others’ life; it aims to teach us to see through their life and absorb their lessons. Only when we achieve its true purpose, can we make progress. While I am reading, I am combining it with my life. By making comparisons and pondering over relationships between them, I get new ideas and thoughts. After reading the book, I do learn a lot, which I think, will be great help to me if I can manage it. Next I will talk about a couple of my thoughts after finishing the book.
In my eyes, we should deal with our relationship with others, especially our enemies, with great care. It is with peace rather than violence that we should treat
our opponents. If he is superior, you just keep your mouth shut and your ear open. Look before you leap. Respond properly only when necessary. Always remember “two wrongs don’t make a right”. You may conceive Elizabeth’s fate, if she attacked back facing with her sister Mary’s cruel reign. Did Mary only imprison her for some time? The answer is obviously “no”. When you are in power, give others forgiveness as possible as you can. It will not only indicate your virtue but also help you win their gratitude.
Have you thought about that why didn’t Mary kill Elizabeth to wipe her continuing misgivings? Elizabeth had nothing then, losing control of her poverty though being the second richest landowner in the country. Luckily, all that she had been left could never be taken away— it was her virtues, which help her win the populace. At last, Mary had to release her sister for fear of civil war. So I believe virtue is its own reward.
Two heads are better than one. We can do ordinary things by ourselves. But when it comes to huge tasks, one person’s ability usually seems far too limited. If we want to gain great achievements, we must be skilled in using others’ excellent thoughts and wisdom. God make us individuals. But we have chance to unite with each other. Nowadays, when tasks are so complicated and demand knowledge and skills of many fields, teamwork is becoming increasingly important, so we will be “out of date” if not armed with abilities of uniting. It also can be seen from the book that Elizabeth asked her counselors to give what they thought the best without respect of her private will. So if understanding this truth, you will be as smart as the queen.
You get what you have sown. Everyone wants to get money，power，reputation and the like, but seldom realizes its dream. What on earth is the reason? Queen Mary killed many people and thus earned the nickname “bloody Mary”. It is true for your situation. You earn what you have. You read few book and know a little. The more you give, the more you get. You get something because you deserve it, whether you like it or not. So be careful with the seeds you choose.
The last thing I want to say is that reading books is only a method of helping us change. But we can’t stop here. Though our thought has changed, our habit still needs improving. Action speaks louder than words. The only and most important thing we should do is to put our thoughts into practice.
