Ronny’s Book

Ronny looked like every other kid in the first-grade classroom where I volunteered as the Reading Mom. However, Ronny stood apart from his classmates in other ways. He had a speech problem so he couldn’t ___13___ like other kids in his grade.

I worked with all the students in Ronny’s class one by one to improve their reading skills. On the days when it was Ronny’s ___14___, I’d give him a silent smile, and he’d fly out of his chair. He sat very close to me and opened the book as if he was opening a treasure nobody had ever seen.

I watched his fingers move slowly under each letter as he struggled to read out. Every time he ___15___ to read a word with a strange pronunciation, the biggest smile would spread across his face and his eyes would shine with pride. It broke my heart each and every time.

A few weeks before the year ended, I held an awards ceremony. I ___16___ Ronny with a book—one of those Little Golden Books that only cost $5. Tears ran down his face as he held the book close to him and went back to his seat. I stayed with the class for the rest of the day. Ronny never let go of the ___17___, not once. It never left his hands.

A few days later, I returned to the school to visit. I ___18___ Ronny on a chair near the playground, the book open in his lap. His teacher said, “He hasn’t put that book down since you gave it to him. Do you know that’s his first book he’s ever actually owned?”

Keeping back my tears, I walked towards Ronny, placed my hand on his shoulder and asked, Ronny?” And then, for the next few minutes, he read to me more ___19___ than I’d ever thought possible from him. The pages were already dog-eared, like the book had been read thousands of times already. When he finished reading, Ronny closed his book and said with great satisfaction

What a powerful contribution(贡献) the writer of that Little Golden Book had made in the life of a disadvantaged child. At that moment, I knew I would get ___20___ about my own writing and do what that writer had done, and probably still does—care enough to write a story that changes a child’s life, care enough to make a difference. 13. Being safe in your everyday life needs knowledge. If you remember the following information, your life will be much safer.

●Always notice the environment around you. You shouldn’t walk alone outside. Make sure where the public phones are. If anything dangerous happens, you can find them easily.

●Your bag should be carried towards the front of your body instead of putting on your back. When a bus is full of people, it is easy enough for a thief to take away the things in the bag on your back.

●If you are followed by someone you don’t know, cross the street and go to the other way, let the person understand that you know he or she is after you. Next, don’t go home at once. You are safer in the street than you are alone in your home or in a lift (电梯).

●If you have to take a bus to a place far away, try to get to the stop a few minutes earlier before the bus leaves. This stops other people from studying you. On the bus, don’t sit alone. Sit behind the driver or with other people. Don’t sleep. 23.Which of the following is dangerous when you are out? A.Go home alone late at night.

New Technology Revolutionizes(变革)Learning

More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, such teaching tools as iPads are used in a lot of courses, including language

Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos, students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.

The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same conversation again and again tounderstand it.

The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn (such as listening to stories and watching movies). The class has become much more interesting and creative.

There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are stored in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now. “I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait until I get home.”

Many adults complain that technologies such as iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad, he will have fewer opportunities to have face-to-face communication with others.

试卷第5页,共11页

However, technologies are already a part of most students’ day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make changes with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.

26.What does the expression “at their own pace” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? ________ A.According to their own timetable. B.Without their teachers’ help. C.Because of their wonderful goals. D.Against their parents’ hope.

27.The writer probably agrees that ________. A.teachers can take control of students’ learning B.exam results depend a lot on now technology C.technology in education has a bright future D.note-taking is as helpful as video-watching

Few of us have heard of Nils Bohlin, but whenever we take a car journey, his invention makes us safer. Found in almost every modern car, you may also wonder how he came up with such a great idea.

Having worked as a plane designer before, Nils knew clearly that the pilots were willing to put on anything to keep them safe in an accident, but to his surprise, he decided to find a perfect system which should be simple, effective and convenient. In the end, which has been considered as one of the greatest inventions in history.

Seat belts prevent people in the cars from serious injury in five ways.

Keep people inside. People who are thrown out from a car are four times more likely to be killed than those who stay inside.

Protect the strongest parts of the body. Seat belts are designed to fix your body at its strongest parts. For an older child and adult, these parts are the hips(臀部)and shoulders.

Spread out the force in an accident. Seat belts spread the force of the accident over a wide area of the body. By putting less stress on one area, they can help you avoid serious injury. Seat belts also help keep your upper body away from the hard parts of the car if you stop suddenly or are hit by another car.

Help the body to slow down. A quick speed causes injury. With the help of the seat belts,

试卷第6页,共11页

your body can have more time to slow down in an accident.

Protect your brain and spinal cord(脊柱). Seat belts are designed to protect these two key areas of the human body. Head and spinal cord injuries may be hard to see immediately, but they can cause death. Therefore, it's of great importance to protect these parts.

It takes only few seconds to buckle up(系好安全带)once you get in the car, but this simple action could save your life. Why wouldn’t you? 28.From the passage we can learn ________.

A.hips and shoulders aren’t the older children and adults’ strongest parts B.seat belts can keep your knees and feet away from the hard parts of the car C.the body has more time to slow down in an accident with the help of seat belts D.head and spinal cord injuries might be easy to see immediately and cause death 29.This passage is mainly about ________. A.how seat belts are made B.how seat belts are used C.how seat belts save lives D.how seat belts develop better

When students and parents are asked to grade subjects according to their importance, the arts are usually at the bottom of the list. Music is nice, people seem to say, but certainly not an education priority(优先).Too often it is only viewed as entertainment. This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.

Music tells us who we are. Because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it shows their thinking and values, as well as the social environment it came from. Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as does a Schubert song. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity(身份, 特性).

Music provides a kind of perception(感知)that cannot be acquired any other way. Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts can express the emotive(情感的)meaning of the same thing. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason:No one way can get it all.

The arts are forms of thought as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings “talk” to each other. They are the

试卷第7页,共11页

language through which we express our fears, our hungers, our discoveries, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.

Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the value of peace and love. So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize. 30.What can we learn from Paragraph 1? ________ A.Students regard music as a way of entertainment. B.Students disagree with their parents on education. C.Students take music as an important subject. D.Students prefer the arts to science.

31.In Paragraph 2, the writer uses jazz as an example to ________. A.compare it with rock music B.show music identifies a society C.introduce American musical traditions D.prove music influences people’s lifestyles

32.According to the passage, the arts and science ________. A.explain the world in different ways B.explain different facts of the world C.express people’s feelings in different ways D.explain what it means to be human differently 33.What is the main idea of the passage? ________ A.Music education is worth more attention. B.Music should be of top education priority. C.Music is really a good communication tool. D.Music education makes students more imaginative. 四、阅读回答问题

The Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League(联盟) in America every year. The champion of the National Football Conference(NFC)competes against the champion of the American Football Conference(AFC)(体系)to decide which is the best team in the country. Super Bowl is far more than a sporting event. The mix of America’s biggest institutions (体系):sports, TV, advertising and entertainment makes the

Super Bowl an American cultural phenomenon.

The Super Bowl is usually held on the last Sunday of January or the first Sunday of February. That day is called Super Bowl Sunday. For years, it has been the most watched one-day sporting event in the US and it gradually has become an unofficial national holiday. The average viewing rate of Super Bowl reached to 44. 9 percent in 2019.

Super Bowl Sunday sees more parties than any other day during the year. Young people are no exception to the party spirit. They gather to watch the game on TV. The Super Bowl is the third biggest eating day in America—behind Christmas and Thanksgiving. Fans host Super Bowl parties by filling their living rooms with junk food and drinks. Guests may arrive dressed in their team’s T-shirt and carrying beer to share.

Knowing that the Super Bowl has the attention of millions of Americans, companies pay big money for game-time advertising. In 2019, the advertising cost set a record-$5. 3 million for 30 seconds. The Super Bowl has developed to a TV selling season sandwiched between after﹣Christmas sales and Valentine’s Day.

Another tradition of the Super Bowl is the Halftime Show, which presents at the half time break between the second and third quarters. The Super Bowl Halftime Show is the most-watched musical event of the year. So it is also called the Americans’ Spring Festival Gala. Non﹣football fans tune (调台) in to the Super Bowl for the most famous musicians’ performances during halftime. As the top performers, Travis Scott and Big Boy gave impressive live show for the audience in the Super Bowl Halftime Show 2019. The show represents a link between American football and pop culture and helps broaden the television audience and nationwide interest.

Americans view the Super Bowl as a National Day of revelry (狂欢). Although people may watch it for different reasons, there is one thing for sure—they can find their own pleasure in it.

I’m glad to hear from you. I had this kind of experience about two years ago. Once my parents received a telephone call at night. My grandmother was seriously ill and they must go back to the hometown to look after her. I must go to school and so they left me home by myself.

At first, it missed my parents so I didn’t sleep well that night. When I woke up next morning, it was late and I went to school without breakfast. I was hungry in class and I didn’t listen to the teacher well. After school I wanted to cook for myself. But I burnt the rice and the pot almost caught fire when I put some oil into it. Luckily, when they went home three days later, they were happy to find that I could look after myself.
