“It was excellent. Everyone there just had a great time,”Pegnataro said. “Those that came guessed it might be their last one.”

Pegnataro said he was on cloud nine to bring his wife of 53 years back to the party, and he introduced her to each of his classmates. “Everyone was very excited at the party. Though we had been separated for so many years, the war brought my class closer together,” he said.

Do’s and Don’ts in Whale(鲸) Watching

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has developed guidelines for whale watching in Johnston Strait, where killer whales are found on a daily basis each summer. It is strongly recommended that vessel(船只) operators follow these guidelines for all kinds of whales.

●Approach whales from the side, not from the front or the back.

●Approach no closer than 100 metres, then stop the boat but keep the engine on. ●Keep noise levels down—no horns, whistles or racing of engines.

●Start your boat only after the whales are more than 100 metres from your vessel. ●Leave the area slowly, gradually moving faster when you are more than 300 metres from the whales.

●Approach and leave slowly, avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction. ●Avoid disturbing groups of resting whales.

●Keep at low speeds and remain in the same direction if travelling side by side with whales.

●When whales are travelling close to shore, avoid crowding them near the shore or coming between the whales and the shore.

●Limit the time spent with any group of whales to less than 30 minutes at a time when within 100 to 200 metres of whales.

●If there is more than one vessel at the same observation spot, be sure to avoid any boat position that would result in surrounding the whales.

It’s five minutes before the exam and you are in a state of panic. You just have to pass it, but how? You didn’t even open the book the night before and you hear a voice in your head saying “Cheat, cheat ...” So what are you going to do, ignore it and fail or go for it? It’s a tough decision many students must make.

Most young people believe that cheating is wrong. However, they have cheated at least once in their high school years. So, why do they do it? Are they too lazy to study? Perhaps, it’s not as simple as that. According to some experts, one main reason why students cheat is that they see their friends get away with it. It’s an easy way out. They avoid embarrassment and their parents’ anger for not doing well in an exam. Another reason is that students think it’s OK to cheat if the subject isn’t important for their future career. What’s more, most students have to put up with the pressure of getting into university. They need to get good marks to carry on with their studies. This means that there will always be students who will do anything for a better mark.

It has never been easier to cheat than it is today. With all the technology available, students needn’t cheat by looking over their shoulders anymore. They use mobile phones to send answers to each other during a test. There is also the Internet. With hundreds of websites, students don’t have to worry because they can find lots of material which they can copy and use in projects. There are even tips on the art of cheating in exams.

Obviously, if you get caught cheating, you fail the exam or the subject. But it

doesn’t really matter whether you get caught or not. What’s important is that it’s wrong. You mustn’t cheat because cheating is a lie. It deceives (欺骗) people into thinking you know more than you actually do. How can you be proud of something you have achieved through cheating? In the end, it’s not about deceiving your teachers and your parents, but about fooling yourself that you can do something you really can’t.

29. The tough decision that many students have to make before an exam is .

A. how to cheat B. what to do if they fail

C. whether to cheat or not D. how to keep calm

30. According to some experts, which is one of the reasons that make students decide to cheat?

A. They think the subject is important enough for their future. B. With all the technology available, they find it easy to cheat. C. They will be made fun of by their friends if they don’t cheat. D. They suffer from great pressure of carrying on with their studies. 31. The worst thing about cheating is that _____.

A. you can get caught and fail B. you cheat others and yourself C. you give others a bad impression D. your teacher will inform your parents 32. What is the text mainly about?

A. Cheating can be explained but not excused. B. Students have found new ways to cheat C. Students cheat to get into university. D. Cheating is a social and psychological problem

Bear farming is a cruel practice that is still allowed only in China, Korea and

Vietnam. These farms mainly extract the bears’bile(胆汁)that are used in traditional medicine or for health-care products like shampoo(洗发香波). This practice is not necessary because there are chemical products that work the same as the bear’s juice. To remove this liquid the animals have a painful process sometimes as often as twice a day, causing them major stress that affects their natural development.

Not only is the process of taking the stomach juices from the animals very painful, but also their living conditions are inhumane. Bears are put in tiny cages where sometimes they can’t turn around or stand. They spend all their time in the cages. Before bears are old enough to produce enough juices to make the business successful, the cubs(幼兽)are trained to entertain tourists. Sometimes they are beaten and forced to learn the tricks.

The WSPA(World Society for the Protection of Animals), an organization recognized by the United Nations, fights against cruelty towards animals. They report that Vietnam has taken a huge step ahead by signing an agreement that promises to get rid of these bear farms. The Vietnamese government together with a WSPA committee will make sure that the goal is reached successfully.

Leah Garces, the campaign director for WSPA states that this might mark “the beginning of the end of the bear farming industry”. WSPA has been trying for many years to get rid of this industry completely.

The agreement not only makes sure that bear farms are not allowed, but also stops people from capturing bears and putting them in captivity. In addition to this, the Vietnamese government is going to build a bear rescue centre in the Cat Tien National Park.

33. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?

A. To tell us bear farming is a common practice.

B. To tell us bear farming is allowed in China, Korea and Vietnam. C. To tell us people are taking measures to protect bears.

D. To tell us the bears’ stomach juices will no longer used in traditional medicine.

34. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Bears will no longer be killed for their bile.

B. In the near future, China may also pass some laws to forbid bear farming. C. The process of taking the bile from bears is very successful. D. Bears can live in the wild before they are old enough. 35. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Bears are usually killed for their furs and meat.

B. The owners of bear farms will be fined heavily according to the Vietnamese government.

C. We can use certain chemical products to take the place of bears’ stomach juices used in

traditional medicine.

D. The bears in the bear farms have good living conditions. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

It’s not news that we spend more time than ever texting and online.36Yes, that’s right: a study shows that more teens are reading good old-fashioned, ink-on-paper books.

Reading is a good way to discover the next big thing and to learn a little more about yourself while you’re at it.37Here are some tips.

Start with your interests

Reading on your own isn’t like reading for school. You can pick something that’s all about your interests, whether it’s ancient martial arts, computers, or fashion design.

Reading the blurbs(简介)

The reviews and quotes on the back and inside covers of many books are called “blurbs”. 38if you find a book you really like, take a minute to read the quotes(if there are any) and see which authors praised the book. Often, they’ll have similar styles and you might find you like books by those authors too.

Ask an expert

39Explain your interests--- rock stars, sports teams, historical events, humors, whatever you’re into—and any writers you like, and your librarian can point you toward books that you’ll love.

Finally, you’ll probably enjoy what you’re reading a lot more if you find a quiet place and make time for the book.40You can put on some good music(ideally without lyrics), get yourself some tea and a comfortable spot, and let yourself be carried away by the book.

You’ll see that time does fly when you are reading something you love! A. Join a group with your friends and people you trust. B. But do you know how to pick a book you’ll really like? C. But did you know that we also spend more time reading?

D. Your local library can hook you up with(介绍)a lot of great book ideas. E. What was your mother’s favorite book when she was your age or your dad’s? F. We all multitask, but most reading is best enjoyed when you can concentrate and focus on it.
