I. Interpret the following from Chinese into English:

1. 中国积极发展同周边国家的友好关系，维护地区的和平与稳定，推动区域经济合作。 2．世界上的各种文明、不同的社会制度和发展道路应彼此尊重，在竞争比较中取长补短，在求同存异同发展。

II. Interpret the following from English into Chinese:

1. 2004 was the best year for global GDP growth in decades. Most parts of the world recorded improved growth performance. The prospects for 2005 remain favorable, although growth is likely to be at a slower, more sustainable pace: it is projected to fall from the estimated outturn for 2004 of about 5% to under 4.5% this year.

2. The nations of Asia matter because they are important political partners with whom we have worked for many years to build a more stable and secure region. They matter because of where they are. Their proximity inextricably links their future prosperity and security with ours. And they matter because of what they are---our largest export markets and the source of much of our investment and imports.

1. China actively develops friendly relations with its surrounding countries, safeguards the peace and stability 9of the region, and promotes economic cooperation at the regional level.

2. Countries having different civilizations and social systems and taking different roads to development should respect one another and draw upon one another’s strong points through competition and comparison and should develop side by side, seeking common ground while shelving differences.

3. China and the US, representing the world’s biggest developing country and the world’s largest e\\developed nation, have had efffective4 cooperation in the economic field. Especially in recent years, China and the US have scored gratifying results in bilateral trade, thanks to the joint efforts of the governments, enterprises and civil societies of the two countries.

4. At present, governments and people of all countries follow closely the development f the world economy. This is because the world today is undergoing profound and complicated changes and we are faced with both opportunities and challenges.

5. Opening to the outside world has greatly promoted the development of China’s foreign trade. China’s import and export volume increased from US$1013billion in 1950 to US$360.65 in 1999.

6．FDI absorption constitutes an important component of China’s basic policy of reform and opening up. With the ever more extensive implementation of

the reform and opening up over the past two decades and more, China has been constantly improving its FDI utilization in terms of scale and quality.

7．Peace and development remain the themes of our era. To preserve peace and promote development bears on the well-being of all nations and represents the common aspirations of all peoples. It is an irresistible trend of history.
