韩剧对中国大学生的影响

The Effects of Korean TV Dramas on Chinese College Students

Abstract: Since the introduction of the first Korean TV dramas to Chinese Mainland in 1993, Korean TV dramas have been played one after another in China, thus a large number of Korean stars have become the idols of young Chinese viewers rapidly. Korean TV dramas have occupied the main place in the cultural market of China in recent years. Many research studies have been carried out on this topic accordingly, such as analysis of Korean campus, the spread and impacts of Korean film culture in China, as well as the analysis of some representative Korean TV dramas and so on. And today, the Korean pie is growing in volume in China, the pro-Koreans (哈韩族) can be seen on campus easily and frequently, and many Korean goods are becoming their preference. In this regard, it’s necessary and urgent to find out the impacts of Korean TV dramas on university students and the reasons for this phenomenon, which has been talked about in the thesis. Based on the questionnaire of college students and the deep study of Korean culture, the thesis established the correct Korean culture values.

1. Korean TV Dramas on Campus

South Korean culture spreads in China continuously since 1990s. Gradually and quietly, South Korean films, music, network games, and stars have swept all

over our country. Nowadays, \"fashion from Korea\" as the dominant youth culture, seems to have swept in Chinese mainland, particularly the Korean TV dramas, costume culture, diet culture and entertainment culture.

Therefore, we used questionnaire to survey how popular it really is among college students. According to the result of the questionnaire, about 18.4 percent of students began to enjoy Korean TV dramas since junior middle school. Although about 36.8 percent of students hold that the beauty and happiness showed in Korean TV dramas are too perfect to be true in real life, they enjoy them in a nearly crazy way, for example, they watch Korean TV dramas, collect posters of Korean stars, buy clothes of Korean style and have Korean food and so on.

2. Reasons of popularity

2.1 Culture

2.1.1. The Influence of Confucianism

South Korean dramas focus on maintaining national characteristics, developing Korean culture and presenting patriotic ideas, which blended Confucianism into it. Chinese characters and Confucianism were introduced to the Korean peninsula thousands of years ago, which promoted the cultural exchange between the two countries, and also played a positive role in furthering the development of ancient Korean culture. Chinese Confucianism essentially sticks to the legislative principle of “close” and “respect”, maintains “Rule of Virtue”,

advocates “rule of man”. “Rule of Virtue” means the fundamental differences. Many Korean dramas display the thoughts of Confucian from different aspects, and unconsciously cater to the potential aethestic standard of Chinese. For example, “Dae Jang Geum \about how an ordinary palace maid becomes the chief cook of Korea through unremitting efforts. By the success of protagonist, the dramas show that achieving success means fighting conscientiously. And we can overcome all kinds of difficulties sooner or later if there is a strong will in our heart. The historical dramas nearly reveal all the fundamental thoughts of Confucian.

2.1.2 The Compensation of Foreign Culture

Since the reform and opening, we have made great achievements in the economic construction. However, the construction of culture is far behind economic construction, especially the youth culture construction appears a huge gap, and it lacks of nativeness and creativity. College students is a group of young people with high IQ, high-quality, and have a higher requirements for immaterial products. They have extensive interests, rich emotion, and long for getting identification. But they cannot be evaluated by the mainstream culture, so naturally they need to seek compensation from foreign cultures, and Korean dramas can fulfill their desire. The popularity of Korean dramas reflects contemporary college students’ inner needs, that is, to look for spiritual compensation in the rich material conditions. And to some extent, it fills the emptiness and lost of their hearts. But because college is a good environment for learning and entertaining, students have enough time and opportunity to watch

Korean dramas, some of them even lose themselves in it and cannot get stuck.

2.1.3The Combination of Eastern and Western Cultural Elements

Compared with Japanese, South Korean culture is more peaceful. Although South Korea's national spirit has a strong side, it is similar to the traditional values of Chinese. Due to the differences in culture, we cannot directly recommend culture from Europe, but Korean culture has already been transformed by Asian culture and European culture, so it is easier to receive the reception.

2.2 Politics

In politics, the South Korean government plays a very important role in the development of the Korean drama. After the Second World War, there is a great difference between China and Korea in the development and conservation of the act art culture. Japan and Korea both have the “Protection System of Culture Property”. Korean TV drama belongs to the visual culture. So it can be protected by the law and supported by the government. With the protection and support of the government, the Korea drama can have a complete freedom and right to develop itself. So that may be one of the most important reasons why it is so popular and develop.

2.3 Others

The sweet and pure love theme is a quite important reason. As we know, most

of the Korean dramas are about love, such as My Girl, Love in Paris and so on. In these Korean TV dramas, the love between the hero and heroine is always sweet, pure and romantic. So when the college students who are full of imagination of love watch this kind of TV dramas, they want to learn the bravery of the lovers in pursuing their love.

Authentic visual arts are also very essential. Since 1990s, the North Korean films are going forward to the industrialized road. The image times replaces the version times. The latter has a great difference in the personality, interest, temperament and direction. So with the development of the film skills, the visual arts are becoming aesthetic and perfect, which make the busy college students feel comfortable and enjoyable when they see them.

The success of idol shaping is another important reason. As we all know, the skill of face-lifting is very developed in Korea. So many TV stars are very beautiful and sweet and admired by their fans. In China, no matter for the middle school students or the college students, they are all wearing the T-shirts with pictures of the North Korea stars. Zhang Dongjian, Song Huiqiao, Rain and many other stars are well known by almost every college students. Many fans watch Korean TV dramas in order to see their idols.

3. The Effects on College Students

3.1 Positive Impacts

3.1.1 Helping Students to Develop Knowledge, New ideas, and Strengthen Their Sense of Innovation

Generally speaking, South Korean dramas are the result of culture-reforming of its own and modern civilized Europe. Many plots are the skillful crystallization of Eastern and Western culture. Therefore, South Korean dramas can not only bring the novelty to college students, but also help to stimulate them to keep up with the pace of times and create a youth culture with their own characteristics. Through watching South Korean dramas, students can understand Korean culture, Korean people's values and behavior more thorough and deeper. After making a clear comparison between different cultures, they can absorb the essence and abandon the dross.

3.1. 2 Helping Students to Enhance the Psychological Endurance in Facing Setbacks and Difficulties

On the whole, the content of most Korean dramas is inspiring. Usually, the hero who is persistent and strong-minded, behaves bravely and faces difficulties optimistically. And eventually his dream would be realized and he would live happily. The up-lifting moments that the main character encourage himself with the word “Yes, I can” when she is involved in troubles frequently happen. The viewer students can easily have a strong sense of identity when they are watching, and regard themselves as the hero unconsciously. And strongly believed that she will succeed by means of hard-working, even though she is just an ordinary person who neither beautiful nor rich. Such kind of unswerving determination and

optimistic attitude is good to enhance students’ psychological affordability.

3.1.3 Helping Students to Establish Correct View of Love

Nowadays, more and more love-accidents and violent behavior between lovers are happening frequently on campus. Investigation shows that the deep and main reason is that they have incorrect concept of love. Because of immature love psychology and impure motives, there are so many non-rational love, for instance, sexual love, game -love, infatuated love, empty love and so on. However, the love affairs happened in the South Korean dramas is pure, sweet and optimistic. It conveys that love means responsibility not the “Contractual love” which is popular on campus ;Love means respect to each other instead of violence .Besides, the South Korean dramas can also lead students to establish right relationship between sex and love, as well as how to deal with it.

3.1.4 Helping Students to Form Ideological and Moral Concept

Under the great impact of economic globalization and the advanced technology, the ideological and moral concept of university students becomes more complicated. The main stream is positive, while the branches can not be ignored. They pay more attention to themselves rather than the group; they stress too much on the importance of freedom while neglect Commission for Discipline Inspection. Meanwhile, they lack for honesty and dream. Fortunately, the South Korean dramas are closely related to this vital problem. There are Truth, Goodness, and Beauty in South Korean dramas. With the good quality of honesty, integrity,

and strong-minded in the personal life, the main character also respects the elder and love the young, what’s more , he is modest , friendly ,considerate, ardent, proactive, and full of sense of responsibility in the family and society. As for the country, he is loyal .All these characters can greatly affect the college students.

3.2 Negative Impacts

Korean TV dramas are commercial products for the purpose of entertainment, so its essential characteristics are the worldliness and utilitarian nature, which inevitably have some negative impacts on college students.

3.2.1 The Impact on Aesthetic Standard

As a popular culture, the focuses of Korean TV dramas are often the strong visual impact and sensory stimulation. Besides, the actor’s style in the drama always tends to be “cool” and \"outblazing\wisdom is always ignored. This may cause the one-sided aesthetic ideas of college students, and this kind of blind adherence to the \"South Korean culture\" may lead college students to neglect their own self-accumulation or even abandon their study and cause bad impacts on their studies. More seriously, it will cause some college students to pour scorn on Chinese traditional culture or even repel it, and they think the best is only in Korea. This phenomenon should be given enough attention.

3.2.2 The Impacts on College Students Values

Korean TV dramas, especially the city idol dramas, which are covered with elegant style covers up the cruel reality so as to create a false situation. It makes the college students be easily divorced from the reality and they set up their pursuit of status and prestige in their imaginative pretense. This kind of impact on students is mainly reflected in the college students’ pursuit of material enjoyment. Some students believe in the power of money, status, lordliness and sex, but disdain those greatest heroes and scholars. They worship Korean idols in the extreme.

3.2.3 The Impact on love view

As a kind of mass media, Korean TV dramas also deeply influence the love value of college students. This influence is revealed in a way that some students treat loving as all their life. As the plots of Korean TV dramas are very modeling, such as Cinderella love stereotypes, it makes students more likely to pursue perfect, ideal and romantic loving context. At the same time, they attach more importance to the form of love than the contents of the loving process. So, there is a concern about the college students’ ability to tolerate frustration when their loving dream suffers a setback.

3.2.4 The Impact on Consumption View

Nowadays, Korean TV dramas and its extension have become the fashion in the eyes of many Chinese college students. Inspired by the Korean TV Dramas, \"Jang Geum cheer!\" has become a pet phrase among the young. \"Three bears\" has

become the popular musical performances among friends. Eating Korean food, using Korean cosmetics, learning Korean, listening to Korean songs, wearing costumes of Korean version and visiting Korea have become fervor. With Korean stars, movies, television dramas and a large number of games entering Chinese market, Korean TV dramas are competing for Chinese viewers, readers and netizens.

4 .The inspiration of Korean popular culture on Chinese Youth culture construction

Faced with the \"fashion from Korea\must. Only when we strengthen the construction of ourselves, attach equal importance to both \"broken\" and \"made\build and improve something , will \"fashion from Korea\" tiptoes quietly, as it comes.

On the one hand, it strengthens the two-way adjustment of mainstream culture and youth culture, and make the youth culture function. Strengthen the education of outlook on life and value. Offering the young's pursuing of value with correct guidance and direction is a must. Let the young realize that natural, healthy and harmonious living standards should be the prerequisite when they enjoy foreign culture. On the other hand, it strengthens cultural construction. We shall provide the youth cultural products and services which meet their taste and needs by the combination of the characteristics of youth. Especially make full use of the function of the Internet, short message services and TV media in youth culture construction. Meanwhile, the characteristics of community culture and

campus culture should be strengthened, letting teenagers enrich their knowledge, release their feelings and increase their abilities in a positive, upward and energetic cultural environment.

With rational thinking and positive action we do believe that we can deal with \"fashion from Korea\" smoothly and do well in national youth culture construction.
