I'm a single person and live with my dog. Jed isn't just my dog. He is my family. He goes everywhere with me. So I was overjoyed last year to hear that Bunnings was allowing dogs on a leash(皮带)- into their stores.
But no sooner had the rule come in than it was quickly repealed(撤销). A little girl in Victoria had walked up to a Jack Russell in a store and been bitten(咬伤). That was it. No more dogs. I don't know the whole story. But here's what I have to say: dogs bite sometimes and kids are sometimes difficult to control.
There is nothing I love more than a kid who wants to touch Jed. But what's even better is when they ask permission first.
I was at my local dog park last week. It's huge, with an off-leash dog area to one side and a fenced-off kids' playground a good distance away. There was a family there that morning —parents and two young girls playing near the dog area. The elder girl started crying at the sight of Jed—\" puppy! There a puppy! \"Jed went right up and started licking(舔)her, which only made her cry louder.
My dog was frightened and tried to get away. The little girl ran after him, shouting loudly. The
parents did nothing; they just let their kid frighten my dog and then said I should have stopped him from licking her.
While they had a choice to play elsewhere, I did not. So I had to walk Jed away.
\"I just don't want to have to meet a dog when I go shopping,\" said one caller on a radio show yesterday. Look, I get that. But the thing is, I don't always want to have your kid kick the back of my seat for two hours on a plane.
When I lived in the UK and the US, I couldn't walk through the stores without stopping to pat dogs. Why can't we follow their practice? (1)What do we know about Jed?
A. He is a troublemaker. B. He means a lot to the author.
C. He is the author's only friend. D. He often goes shopping with: the author. (2)Why did Bunnings stop following the rule?
A. A girl lost her dog there. B. Dogs were badly-behaved. C. Most people were against it. D. It wanted to keep its customers safe. (3)What happened at the dog park?
A. The little girl was hurt. B. Jed was treated unfairly.
C. Jed played happily with the girl. D. The parents stopped their daughter. (4)What does the author think of the caller's words?
A. Meaningless. B. Hurtful. C. Reasonable. D. Touching. 【答案】 (1)B (2)D (3)B (4)B

Failure is an unavoidable part of life. Though science has named some life skills that promise success, we're told over and over again that no great success was ever achieved without failure -- or many failed attempts. One of life's most important lessons, therefore, has to be how to handle failure best. But what is the message?
For starters, ignore advice from anyone that tells you, \"Don't beat yourself up about it,\" no matter how well-meaning they are. According to the new research from the University of Kansas, we absolutely should be beating ourselves up when we fail. Marketing professor Noelle Nelson and her team found that the more emotional a person's response is to failure, the more likely they are to achieve better results the next time they deal with a related task.
The researchers carried out two experiments in which undergraduate students were required to perform specific tasks. In one experiment, they were asked to search online for a squeezer and report the lowest price they could find with the possibility of winning a $50 cash prize. However, the task was controlled, and all participants were told (by a computer) that the lowest price was $3.27 less than their reported price. Consequently, no participant won the cash prize. When the results were announced, some participants were asked to focus on their emotional response, and others on their cognitive (认知的) response. During the next similar task, participants who focused on their emotional response to failure made more effort than those who focused on a cognitive response.
Everybody has their own unique challenges, responsibilities, duties, and projects, but these findings are related to all of us. Your personal failure may be a cake that fails to rise, a presentation that goes wrong, or a deadline that gets missed—it doesn't matter. What matters is how you react to it. Instead of thinking about the failure, let yourself feel bad about it. Then follow this advice on how to bounce back after your failure. (1)What's the relationship between failure and success? A.Failure promises success. B.Failure is the key to success. C.Failure does damage to success. D.Well-handled failure is good for success.
(2)Why does the writer support beating oneself up when failing? A.It's a well-meaning suggestion for failure. B.It's been proved by the study of a university. C.Being emotional is good for his future success. D.It can make people less emotional about failure. (3)Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Personal Failure Is a Cake That Fails to Appear B.The Most Productive Way to Handle Any Failure C.Different Methods to Change Failure into Success D.The Reason Why Failure Is the Mother of Success 【答案】 (1)D (2)C (3)B

I'm not so sure I like my friends any more. I used to like them — to be honest. We'd have lunch, talk on the phone or exchange e-mails, and they all seemed normal enough. But then came Facebook and I was introduced to a sad fact: many of my friends have dark sides that they had kept from me.
Today my friends show off the more unpleasant aspects of their personalities via Facebook. No longer hidden, they're thrown in my face like TV commercials — unavoidable and endless advertisements for the worst of their personalities.
Take Fred. If you were to have lunch with him, you'd find him warm, and down-to-earth. Read his Facebook and you realize he's an unbearable, food-obsessed bore. He'd pause to have a cup
of coffee on his way to save a drowning man — and then write about it.
Take Andy. You won't find a smarter CEO anywhere, but now he's a CEO without a company to lull. So he plays Mafia Wars on Facebook. He's doing well — level 731. Thanks to Facebook, I know he's playing about 18 hours a day. Andy, you've run four companies — and this is how you spend your downtime(业余时间)? What happened to golf? What happened to getting another job?
Take Liz. She is positive that the H1N1 vaccine(甲流疫苗) will kill us all and that we should avoid it. And then comes Chris who likes to post at least 20 times a day on every website he can find, so I get to read his thoughts twice, once on Facebook and once on Twitter.
In real life, I don't see these sides of people. Face to face, my friends show me their best. They're nice, smart people. But face to Facebook, my friends are like a blind date which goes horribly wrong.
I'm left with a dilemma. Who is my real friend? Is it the Liz I have lunch with or the anti-vaccine lunatic(狂人)on Facebook? Is it the Fred I can grab a sandwich with or the Fred who weeps if he's at a party and the wine isn't up to his standards? (1)What's Andy probably busy in doing now?
A. He's running his company. B. He's playing golf all day. C. He's looking for another job. D. He's playing computer games. (2)Who is opposed to the H1N1 vaccine in the text?
A. Fred. B. Andy. C. Liz. D. Chris. (3)According to the text, Facebook tends to ______. A. present another side of people B. offer some food for free C. show endless advertisements D. get you to more parties (4)The text is developed mainly by ______. A.giving examples B.following the time order C.listing figures D.raising questions 【答案】 (1)D (2)C (3)A (4)A
So he plays Mafia Wars on Facebook. He's doing well — level 731. Thanks to Facebook, I know he's playing about 18 hours a day.“所以他在Facebook上玩游戏,他打的不错-731级。
Take Liz. She is positive that the H1N1 vaccine(甲流疫苗) will kill us all and that we should avoid it.“以Liz为例。
Today my friends show off the more unpleasant aspects of their personalities via Facebook.“现在我的朋友通过Facebook展现出他们性格中令人不愉快的方面)和倒数第二段的In real life, I don't see these sides of people. Face to face, my friends show me their best. They're nice, smart people. But face to Facebook, my friends are like a blind date which goes horribly wrong.” 故选A。
故选A。

One evening in February 2007, a student named Paula Ceely brought her car to a stop on a remote road in Wales. She got out to open a metal gate that blocked her path. That's when she heard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Renault Clio was parked across a railway line. Seconds later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometre down the railway tracks. Ceely's near miss made the news because she blamed it on her GPS device. She had never driver the route before. It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS, but it made no mention of the crossing. \"I put my complete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train,\" she told the BBC.
Who is to blame here? Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely's story in his book When Machines Fail Us, points the finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, he says, but our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it's not just GPS devices: Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless keyboards.
The problem with his argument in the book is that it's not clear why he only focuses on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A map-maker might have left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention. Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for poor signaling system. Or maybe someone has studied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the GPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn't say.
It's a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account of the advanced techniques that criminals use to defeat computer-based locking systems for cars. He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says that once again not all new locks have proved reliable, Perhaps, but maybe it's also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or
some combination of these factors.
The game between humans and their smart devices is amusing and complex. It is shaped by economics and psychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be a way for a wiser use of technology.
If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortcomings of our machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just a. s long.
(1)What did Paula Ceely think was the cause of her accident? A. She was not familiar with the road. B. It was dark and raining heavily then. C. The railway workers failed to give the signal. D. Her GPS device didn't tell her about the crossing.
(2)The phrase \"near miss\" (Paragraph 2) can best be replaced by ________. A. close hit B. heavy loss C. narrow escape D. big mistake (3)Which of the following would Rick Stevenson most probably agree with? A. Modern technology is what we can't live without. B. Digtal technology often falls short of our expectation. C. Digital devices are more reliable than they used to be. D. GPS error is not the only cause for Ceely's accident.
(4)In the writer's opinion, Stevenson's argument is ________.
A. one-sided B. reasonable C. puzzling D. well-based (5)What is the real concern of the writer of this article? A. The major causes of traffic accidents and car thefts. B. The human unawareness of technical problems. C. The shortcomings of digital devices we use. D. The relationship between humans and technology. 【答案】 (1)D (2)C (3)B (4)A (5)D
根据第二段中的\"Ceely's near miss made the news because she blamed it on he GPS(导航仪).\" 可知Ceely认为事故发生的原因是GPS没有指出那个路口。
We put our faith in digital devices, he says, but our
digital helpers are too often not up to the job.\" 可知Stevenson认为是科技设备应该被指责,即它们不能满足人们的需要,故选B。
根据第四段中的 \"The problem with his argument in the book is that it's not clear why he only focuses on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes.\" 可知作者认为Stevenson只关注到了片面的,故选A。
根据倒数第二段中的\"The game between humans and their smart devices is amusing and complex.\" 可知作者在讨论完Ceely这起事故后,在最后两段将讨论延伸到了人与科技的关系上,因此作者实际关心的内容是人与科技的关系,故选D。
We were silently waiting on the platform in the late afternoon. There he was, my 80-year-old grandfather with his silvery hair. And there I was, a teenage girl in my jeans and T-shirt. His aged but still clear blue eyes were taking in the scene as I wondered how I was going to get through the next two days. Why did I ever agree to accompany my cranky grandpa on a train ride from New York to Georgia?
No one else wanted to be the fellow traveler since my grandfather refused to fly. In contrast, I loved to fly since I wanted to get to the destination as quickly as possible. No matter what anyone told my grandfather about the comfort and safety of flying, he refused to book a flight, saying, \"It's not just the trip; it's the adventure of getting there.\"
With my first step onto the train, the journey was already different from what I expected. The train was modem and filled with friendly travelers. We settled into the club car, where we could enjoy food and drinks while watching the scenery pass. Instead of listening to my music, I became a willing audience and learned family history that I had never had the time or patience to learn. With teary eyes, he told me that going to family events was hard for him since my grandmother died. It always made him think about those who were no longer with us. For the first time I felt I understood him. I gained a new appreciation for our time together.
In this fast-paced world, we often miss important moments. There is great significance in listening to elders who offer a piece of their history and experience. I may be more open to opportunities to stay with my grandpa. Life isn't just about the destination; it's about the journey. (1)What does the underlined word \"cranky\" in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Health. B. Strange. C. Selfless. D. Outgoing. (2)What did the author think of the journey at first? A. It would be boring.
B. She would learn something during it.
C. It would be a chance to know about her grandpa. D. She would enjoy the beautiful scene during it.
(3)What made the author change her attitude towards staying with her grandpa? A. Her grandpa's appreciation of her. B. Her grandpa's missing her relatives.
C. The sad stories of her grandmother. D. The new understanding of her grandpa. (4)What can we learn from the text? A. Listening to elders will help us learn a lot. B. Caring for elders needs a lot of creativity. C. There always is beautiful scenery along the journey. D. Travelling by train is more comfortable than by plane. 【答案】 (1)B (2)A (3)D (4)A
根据第一段中的“No one else wanted to be the fellow traveler since my grandfather refused to fly.” Why did I ever agree to accompany my cranky grandpa on a train ride from New York to Georgia?
根据第一段中的“His aged but still clear blue eyes were taking in the scene as I wondered how I was going to get through the next two days.”
答案第三段中的“For the first time I felt I understood him. I gained a new appreciation for our time together.” 根据最后一段中的“There is great significance in listening to elders who offer a piece of their history and experience.”

I had an experience some years ago, which taught me something about the ways in which people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I had to hold two funerals for two elderly women in my community. Both had died \"full of years\as the Bible would say. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence(吊唁) calls on the two families on the same afternoon.
At the first home, the son of the deceased(过世的)woman said to me, \"If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It's my fault that she died.\" At the second home, the son of the other deceased woman said, \"If only I hadn't
insisted on my mother's going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride, the sudden change of climate, was more than she could take. It's my fault that she's dead.\" You see that any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course—keeping Mother at home, putting off the operation—would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?
There seem to be two elements involved in our willingness to feel guilty. The first is our need to believe that the world makes sense, that there is a cause for every effect and a reason for everything that happens. That leads us to find patterns and connections both where they really exist and where they exist only in our minds.
The second element is the view that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen. It seems to be a short step from believing that every event has a cause to believing that every disaster is our fault. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood. A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and summons the rest of the world to his tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely outgrow that childish view that our wishes cause things to happen.
(1)What is said about the two deceased elderly women? A.They lived out a natural life.
B.They died of exhaustion after the long plane ride. C.They weren't used to the change in weather. D.They died due to lack of care by family members.
(2)The author had to conduct the two women's funerals probably because . A.he wanted to comfort the two families B.he was an official from the community C.he had great pity for the deceased D.he was minister of the local church
(3)People feel guilty for the death of their loved ones because . A.they found the funerals unsatisfactory B.they believed that they were responsible C.they had ignored the natural course of events
D.they didn't know things often turn in the opposite direction
(4)People have been made to believe since babyhood that . A.everybody should try to meet others' needs B.life and death is an unsolved mystery C.every story should have a happy ending
D.their wishes are the cause of everything that happens 【答案】 (1)A (2)D (3)B

The arts, especially music, should be part of every school's lessons at every grade level. Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions. People develop all these skills when they learn music.
