Is It Advisable to Look for Friends Online? (447 words)
When asked whether it is advisable to look for friends online, different voices may be heard over the issue, but personally I do not think it is wise to do so. The main reasons why I am not in favor of making friends online are insecurity, temporality, and escapism.
Firstly, it is not safe to look for friends via the net. There are too many people online, each with specific characteristics, so it is rather difficult to distinguish sincere nice people from jokers or weirdoes. To make things worse, there are all kinds of lies and frauds online, making it harder for us to tell the true from the false. As the cyberspace is much more complicated than the life circle that we can come into contact with in the real world, we may possibly get fooled, hurt and even cheated when looking for friends in it. Especially for the youth with less social experience, it is rather dangerous to make friends with almost total strangers.
Secondly, it is rather hard to maintain lasting friendship online. For one thing, most online friends do not truly trust each other. They may meet and pass time chatting or emailing to each other, but they almost never tell personal details such as real names and identities in order to protect themselves. For another, most online friends do not feel committed to each other as real friends do. They may share feelings or experiences, but they stay out of each other's life circles and seldom give practical help. As the old saying goes, easy come, easy go--it holds true for the online friendship.
Thirdly, over-reliance on Net pals may alienate us from our family and real-life friends. It is true that sometimes we can tell unhappiness to an online friend without hesitation since we can avoid the embarrassment of talking face to face. However, suppose whenever we have unpleasant experiences, we are inclined to talk heart to heart with the imaginary friend online, we may become quite silent and introverted before long. The more we depend on our online friends, the less we will communicate with our family or friends in the real world. As a result, we may entrap our lives in the so-called \"virtual world\make a negative effect on both our personal development and family happiness or friendship.
In short, I think the disadvantages of making friends online outweigh its advantages. As there are our family and friends in the real world caring for us, it would be a great shame if we devoted our time and energy to looking for friends online while neglecting the most important people to us in daily life.
