Blood bank gets bigger

【1】HOW many blood types are there? Most people know A, B, AB and O. But researchers at the University of Vermont, US, have discovered two new blood types – bringing the total number of types up to 32, according to a report in Popular Science (Popsci.com) on February 24. The new types are named Junior and Langereis.

【2】Blood is mainly made up of plasma (血浆) and cells. A long time ago doctors thought all blood was the same. When people lost too much blood, they would do blood transfusions (输血) with any kind of blood, and the patients often died. It wasn’t until 1900 that Karl Landsteiner, a scientist at the University of Vienna, Austria, found that the plasma of some people could react badly to the red blood cells of others.

【3】Based on the reactions between the red blood cells and the sera (血清), Landsteiner was able to divide people’s blood into three groups: A, B, and O. Landsteiner received the Nobel Prize for his discovery. Two years later, two of his students discovered a fourth type, AB.

【4】Since then, over 20 blood group systems and seven antigen (抗原) collections have been defined, most of which are very rare, according to the International Society of Blood Transfusion (国际输血协会). Take Junior as an example. It is mostly found in East Asia countries, especially in Japan, according to Bryan Ballif, scientist at the University of Vermont. Only about 50,000 Japanese people belong to this blood group.

【5】Although the new types ___________, it is still extremely important for scientists to recognize each one. A blood transfusion between two types of blood that don’t get along could be fatal (致命的). 【6】Some people believe that blood type affects personality as well as medical needs. In Japan, for example, some people look at blood type in relation to a person’s job, friendships and love life. They believe that people of a certain blood type should stick to a certain diet to stay healthy and live longer.

【7】However, there is no scientific evidence behind this theory. The discovery of two more blood types might save many more lives, but it isn’t an explanation behind the millions of different personalities in the world.

Working Individually or Working in a Team

Dear teachers and schoolmates,

The topic of my speech today is “working individually or working in a team”. As we know, there are basically two ways to get work done. One is to work individually. In this way, people can decide for themselves when to start work and how to do it. What’s more, they’ll be able to learn how to solve problems on their own.

People may also choose to work in a team where they can learn from each other and help each other. Besides, they may work out ways to get work done by discussion.

Personally, I prefer to work in a team, which offers me a chance to learn how to get along with others and to share my experiences with them. As the work can be divided among several people, it can be done differently. Teamwork is always important.

Thank you for your listening!
