My parents are never happy with me. They are always criticizing (批评) my clothes, my hair and the music I listen to. They hate my friends’ looks and they keep complaining (抱怨) when I go with them. I’m not allowed to stay out as late as my friends do, so I can’t have any fun. My parents only seem to care about my school marks. Though I love them, sometimes I feel we live in different worlds. If they love me, can’t they understand me? How can I make them understand me?

Angel

Dear Angel,

Your problem is common to both teenagers and parents. Don’t worry, because it is natural.

You see, your parents have grown up at a different time and they have different experiences. So they think some things are strange, but you find the same things common. For example, the music you like may sound like noise to them. Your parents love you,so they think they must protect you from whatever they find strange. On the other hand, you don’t want to be different from other teenagers, so you feel that your parents restrict you.

I think you should talk about this problem with your parents. Try to explain to them what you want and make them know they can believe you. Sooner or later ,they will find you are a responsible (有责任心的) person and they will give you more freedom (自由).

Dear Kids Advice Magazine,

Hi, my name is Evan and being the eldest child in the family surely has its disadvantages.

First of all, I have to share all my toys and games with my younger siblings, William and Julia. Of course ,they don’t need to return the favour because I’m totally uninterested in their things. Besides that, Julia and William are always hanging around me. It’s especially annoying when I have a friend over. We look for a secluded place in the house where they can’t disturb (打扰)us,but within minutes, they’ve found us and are asking to join in.I just can’t seem to get a moment’s peace. At meal times, I have to eat whatever is on my plate regardless of the portion size or taste. William and Julia only need to try one bite when it’s not their favorite food. Not only this, but I’m

10

expected to be cooperative (合作的,配合的)at all times because I’m the oldest and need to be a role model for them.

It doesn’t seem fair either that I have more chores to do around the house than Julia and William put together. Plus, when it comes to practising our musical instruments, I have to practise more than double the time. Oh, and the worst part of it all is the huge quantities of homework I get compared to them.

I’m feeling rather annoyed with my sibling situation. Can you please write back with some advice?

Yours truly, Evan Smith

But today an even greater number of adults cycle.along roadsides and bicycle paths. These new riders are often trying to become fit or lose weight. Bicyclists should never ride against the traffic, nor should they carry other people on their bicycles. They are also supposed to ride in single line on busy streets and to \"walk bicycles across the busy intersections(交叉路口). By following these rules, bicycle riders will not only stay healthy but also be safe. In one recent year, the National Safety Council reported that 34 thousand bicycle riders were hurt in highway accidents. In that same year, another six hundred riders were killed. Since the introduction of crash helmets(头盔)in 1980, the number of injuries(伤者)and deaths from bicycling accidents had gone down. Today, more and more riders realize the dangers of bicycling.
