℃There are nearly 6, 000 different languages in the world. But have you ever noticed any similarities among them? Language studies have shown that the words for “mama” and “papa” around the world have surprisingly similar sounds.

℃Scientists used to believe the words might be similar because many languages started from Proto-Indo-European(原始印欧语). Many languages now spoken in Europe came from this language. In France people say “mama” and “papa”, and “mamma” and “papa” in Norway. However, this does not explain why there are similarities outside of Europe, such as “nanay” and “tatay” in the Philippines(菲律宾) as well as in some areas in China. So what could cause this similarity around the world?

℃Russian-American linguist Roman Jakobson shares his findings. “If you’re a baby trying to make a sound, the easiest vowel(元音) is ‘ah’. Because you can make it without doing anything with your tongue or lips(嘴唇) ,” Jakobson said. As babies begin to make other noises, they try some of the easier consonant(铺音) sounds. “M” and “p” are also made easily, so these sounds often develop next. Babies make the new sound “mmmm”, and then relax into an open mouth sound, usually “ah”. So the sound of “ma” or “pa” is often connected to a child’s first words all around the world.
