Aqueous solution or dispersion of a hydrolyzed copolymer of styrene andmaleic anhydride having a molar ratio of styrene to maleic anhydride superior to 1 : 1 anda molecular weight (numerical average) of more than 400, characterized in that thecopolymer has a molar ratio in the range of from 1.5 : 1 to 6 : 1 and a molecular weight offrom 500 to 80 000, 1 to 60 percent of the carboxyl groups of the copolymer areneutralized, and the pH of the solution or dispersion is below 7.
