1. Teaching Objectives:

To know the meaning and usage of some important words, phrases and patterns

To be familiar with the writing skills of the text and make use of it in writing

To respond and cooperate with classmates willingly

To read sentences and texts with proper intonation

To write smoothly and legibly

Step 1. Word Using

Step 1 Greetings

Greet the whole class as usual.

Step 2. Review

1. Ask students some questions to review the last lesson(show them on the screen).

2. Check the homework(made a list of celebrities whose achievements have

1. The definition of a role model

2. The extraordinary personality about Bill Gates

Purposes

1. To develop Ss’ online learning ability

2. To improve Ss’ ability to retrieve the relevant information

3. To stimulate Ss’ psychomotor thinking

4. To arouse Ss’ interest in learning the unit

Method: Talk in groups; Use task-based language teaching method, communicative approach, and audiolingual method.

Step 3. Lead-in and preparation for reading

Show the Ss some pictures and let them talk to each other about the topic on the

screen.

Purpose: Arouse the students’ interest of study. Bring in new subject: Study Abroad.

Method: Use the CAI, PPT software and talk in groups; Use task-based language teaching

method, communicative approach, audio-visual method and audiolingual method.

Step 4. Fast reading

Ask the Ss to read the passage as quickly as they can and to answer the questions on the screen. Let them get the main idea of each paragraph and make clear about the text structure.

Text structure: ( structured writing )

Purpose: Improve the students’ reading and writing ability and understand the general idea of each paragraph.

Method: Read the text individually and talk in groups; Use task-based language teaching method, reading approach, communicative approach and total physical response method.

Step 5. Preparation for details of the text on the screen

Ss are required to look at the words and Phrases on the screen and give a brief presentation in class.

Words and Phrases:

Purpose: Train the Ss’ ability of understanding and using foreign language.

Method: Talk in groups, Use task-based language teaching method, communicative approach and total physical response method.

3.2 While-reading Activities

Step 6. Intensive reading

Ss are asked to read the passage carefully again and answer some detailed questions on the screen. During the reading, there is an explanation for the

Language Points:

1.Without a doubt, Bill Gates belongs in the same class as Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and other great minds who changed the world.

Meaning: undoubtedly, Bill Gates is one of greatest men , such as Thomas Edison and Elexander Graham Bell, who changed the world.

belong in : be in the proper position or place .

The old man’s attitude toward the money does’t belong in the modern world.

那个老人对金钱的看法和现代社会格格不入。

2.Gates success stems from his personality : unbelievable and at times frightening blend of high-voltage brilliance,drive and competitiveness.

Meaning: Gates’success mainly comes from his personality: his intelligence, his energy and his competition which make us feel incredible and shocking.

stem from: be caused by something or develop as a result of something

His failure in the exam stems from his poor health. 他考试不及格归咎于他的身

3.The schedule he keeps is one hint as to what he expects from his employees.

Meaning: Even from his schedule one can know that what he expects his worker to do.

We ‘d better make decisions as to whether to go for a trip or not when we get there .至于是否去郊游我们最好到那里以后再做决定。

expect from (of): believe something(usually good)will be finished by someone

Parents always expect too much from the future of their children.父母总是对孩子的将来抱很多的期望。

The wife expects great things of her husband. 妻子对她的丈夫寄予厚望。

Meaning: You had better get used to it because trying to beat him is useless.

Pay attention to the sentence pattern “There is no use doing something.” Similar patterns include : There/ It is no good /sense/point/doing something . For example:

It is no use talking to him.和他谈没有用。

There is no point debating with him.和他争论没有意义。

Typical patterns:

Purpose: Further understand the text (Train further reading ability) to find out some difficult sentences and details of the text.

Method: Read the text together; Use task-based language teaching method, reading approach, communicative approach, grammar-translation approach and total physical response method.

3.3 Post-reading Activities

Step7. Consolidation

Retell the passage according to the topic sentences.

Show a movie clip about the life of Bill Gates and his family and ask the Ss the
