ABSTRACTInthispaperthetensilepropertiesandfracturebehaviourofaluminumalloy2009rein-forcedwithsiliconcarbideparticulates(SiCp)fabricatedviaelementalpowdermetallurgicaltechniquewerepresented.Theresultsindicatethatthestrengthof15%SiC/2009Alcompositedecreasewithincreasingparticulatessize,butductilityinversely.Whenparticulateswere1.5μm,thebreakageisduetotearingofmatrixnearinterface.Thefailureofcompositeswith20μmparticulateresultsfromcrackofSiCp.Whenparticulatesarebetweenabovesizes,thefailureofcompositeresultsfromtearingofmatrixnearinterfaceandcrackofSiCp.
