My 16 - year - old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming hole. Most of the kids swim there, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety.
Still, the firefighter's first words \"You need to come up here to the Stillwater River\" made me catch my breath, and his follow - up words gave me relief: \"Your son is OK.”
When I got to the river, I immediately saw the fire truck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.
2
I hurried over to him. \"You OK?\"I asked.
“Yeah,\" was all he said. But my eyes begged for an explanation ,I didn't get it from my son, however, who tends to play his cards close to his chest.
The story was this: A woman was being swept under water. Hearing the cries, Anton and his friend Tyler, without hesitation, swam out to her, and brought her safely to shore.
In an age in which the word \"hero\" is broadcast with abandon and seemingly applied to anyone who make it through the day, I realized the real thing in my son. The teens are stubborn and self - centered, but that didn't mean they have no desire to do good. Still shocked by my son's daring, I drove him home. Along the way, I tried to dig out some more information from him-but he had precious little to say. The only words he said were, “What's for supper?\"
I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got up, I had expected him to tell me the story. But all he did was toast some bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to start a new day. Watching from the window,1 was reminded that still water often runs deep.
21. Why did the mother allow her son to swim there?
A. He was an excellent swimmer.
B. The water of the river is shallow. C. He was old enough to swim.
D. The rocks can be of help if there' s danger.
22. The underlined part \"who tends to play his cards close to his chest\" probably means .
A. Anton is a boy fond of swimming with other kids B. Anton is unwilling to tell others what he thinks C. Anton always has a desire to help others D. Anton seldom changes his mind
23.What might be the best title for the passage?
A. My Son, My Hero B. Anton, A Silent Boy C. A Good Deed D. A Proud Mother

A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high - tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform
4
controlled flight tasks.
\"It's extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components (元件), \" said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go - ahead to start piecing together the components. \"The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,\" he said.
They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. \"The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it' s connected to,\" said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of' the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.
While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off - board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built - in power source, so that it might someday perform data - gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers' fields or on the battlefield . \" Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,\" he said.
Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect - scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. \"You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,\" he said. \"So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day - to - day basis. \"
28. The difficulty the team of engineers met with while making the robotic fly was
that
A. they had no model in their mind B. they did not have sufficient time C. they had no ready - made components D. they could not assemble the components
29. It can be inferred from Paragraphs 3 and 4 that the robotic fly
A. consists of a flight device and a control system B. can just fly in limited areas at the present time C. can collect information from many sources D. has been put into wide application
30. Which of the following can be learned from the passage?
A. The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.
5
B. Animals are not allowed in biological experiments. C. There used to be few ways to study how insects fly. D. Wood' s design can replace animals in some experiments.
31. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Father of Robotic Fly
B. Inspiration from Engineering Science C. Robotic Fly Imitates Real Life Insect D. Harvard Breaks Through in Insect Study

The Puritans (清教徒) get a bad reputation in America - especially when it comes to alcohol.
Mayflower, the first ship that came over from England to Massachusetts Bay, actually carried more beer than water. In fact the Founding Fathers of America liked a drink - Samuel Adams was a partner in his father' s brewery, and Thomas Jefferson was famous for importing European wines.

Most Americans in 1790 consumed an average of 5. 8 gallons of pure alcohol a year. In 1830, consumption reached 7. 1 gallons a year and alcoholism was starting to have a serious influence on communities. Women and children might be in physical danger if the man of the house began drinking. If he became ill or lost his job through drinking, there was no social safety net to support or protect his family. Eventually, alcoholism was being treated as a disease.
By the late 19th Century, support for Prohibition, banning the manufacture and sale of alcohol, was powerful. However, by the 1930s when American economy was experiencing a hard time it was widely believed that making alcohol legal again would provide badly - needed jobs and taxes. So in February of 1933, Prohibition was ended. Still, Prohibition had a great influence on alcohol drinking in this country. In 1955, Americans drank an average of 2.3 gallons of pure alcohol a year. The Prohibition movement was still quite strong after Prohibition ended and it led to a lot of local prohibition on alcohol.
The American presidency has done a lot to rehabilitate alcohol and make it respectable again. Presidents Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama can all be seen on film drinking socially and making official toasts with international celebrities.
