Over the past ten years, great changes have taken place in our houmetown. In the past, the houses in our hometown were poor. The water in the rivers was very dirty. People used to walk or ride bicycles to go to work. But now, many people in our hometown have moved into tall buildings (There are many tall buildings here and there.) The rivers are clean and people can swim in them. People can take buses or drive their own cars to go to work.

An announcement

May I have your attention please, everyone? I have an announcement to make. Tomorrow is March 12th ---Tree Planting Day. In order to protect our environment and stop flood and drought happening so often, we’ll go to the West Hill to plant trees tomorrow. We’ll meet at 7:30 at the school gate. We’ll go there by bus. You’d better put on your old clothes. Please bring tools and lunch with you. Don’t be late, please.

Dear Editor,

I am a student in Grade Three. We have made a survey ---“To whom you go when in trouble”. Here are the results. Most of the students will go to their classmates of friends when in trouble because they’re almost of the same age. They can talk with, communicate with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students. Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can’t get on well with others. They have few friends.

In my opinion, when in trouble we’d better ask our teachers, parents, friends or classmates for help. Yours Sincerely, Li Ping

The environment is becoming worse and worse. There are many kinds of pollutions that I worry about. The most serious two are water pollution and air pollution because people can’t live healthily with dirty water and polluted air, nor can animals. More and more diseases are caused by polluted air.

I think factories should not pour dirty water into the river directly or produce more waste gas. We’d better go on foot or by bike instead of by car, because more cars mean more waste gas. We should make our world more and more beautiful. Another possible version:

The first problem to be worried about is noise pollution. People can’t sleep well if there is too much noise. That’s why so many people prefer to live in the countryside rather than live in the noisy city. I suggest all the factories and cars shouldn’t make terrible noises. If they make terrible noise that isn’t allowed, they will be fined. We can also produce the cars which won’t make terrible noise.

The other pollution is rubbish pollution. If everyone makes so much rubbish, one day we may live in a world filled with rubbish. Some people throw the waste paper about. I suggest rubbish should be put into different kinds of dustbins or paper bags.

It was finished in May, 2004. It was open in August, 2004. It lies on Zhongshan Road, next to the Sciensium and across from the park. There are three floors in the building. If you want to read something, you needn’t go upstairs. You can find reading rooms on the first floor. The biggest room of the building is here for storing books. On the third floor, there is a meeting room which can hold 200 people and a computer room. It’s a quiet and nice place for us to read books here. I like it very much.

One May 3, Lien Chan finished his eight-day visit to the mainland. Only two days later, Song Chunyu visited again. They visited some cities and went back to their hometowns. President Hu Jintao met them in Beijing and had friendly talks with them. After their visits, things are getting better. Taiwan can now sell more fruits in the mainland, the mainland plants to give a pair of pandas to Taiwan, and mainland people will soon be able to travel to the beautiful island.
