My Favorite Fruit
Hi there! My name is Emily and I'm going to tell you all about my absolute favorite fruit. Are you ready? It's strawberries! I just love strawberries so much. They're sweet, juicy, and so delicious. Strawberries are these bright red fruits that grow on a little green plant. The plants have green leaves and white flowers that bloom in the spring. As the flowers go away, green little berries start to form. Over time, the green berries turn a brilliant ruby red color. That's when you know they are ripe and ready to eat! My family has a little garden in our backyard. Every year, my mom plants a bunch of strawberry plants. I help her dig the holes and put the little plants in the dirt. Then we water them and wait patiently. Once the flowers bloom, I get so excited because I know the strawberries are coming soon!
The strawberries start off really tiny, like the size of my baby fingernail. Week by week, they get bigger and bigger and turn from green to white to red. I check on them every single day after school. I can't wait for them to be ready to pick!
Finally, after what feels like forever, the strawberries are big, plump, and crimson red. That's when my mom says it's
strawberry picking time! I grab my little basket and head outside. I inspect each berry closely, looking for the biggest, reddest, most perfect ones. I gently twist them off the plant, being careful not to squish them.
I love picking strawberries on a warm, sunny day. I can smell their sweet aroma as I'm kneeling in the garden. I breathe in their delicious strawberry smell. It makes my mouth water just thinking about eating them!
After I've picked all the ripe ones, I head inside to wash them. I run them under cool water, being gentle so I don't bruise them. Then I carefully pat them dry with a paper towel.
Now comes the best part - eating them! I grab a big bowl and fill it up with the fresh strawberries. Sometimes I like to eat them plain, just popping them right into my mouth. The juice dribbles down my chin, but I don't mind one bit. They are so perfectly sweet and juicy.
Other times, I'll add a bit of sugar on top of the strawberries and let them sit for a bit to get all syrupy. Or I'll slice them up and put them over a bowl of vanilla ice cream for a strawberry sundae. Strawberries also taste amazing when dipped in chocolate! No matter how I eat them, strawberries are my number one favorite treat.
My little brother's favorite part is the strawberry tops. You know, the green leafy part that you're supposed to cut off before eating? Well he thinks those are hilarious. He likes to put them between his teeth and walk around saying \"Look mom, I'm a strawberry monster!\" We all laugh at his silly jokes.
Strawberries aren't just delicious, they're really good for you too. My teacher taught us that strawberries have lots of vitamin C, which helps keep you from getting sick. They also have fiber, which is good for your body. Who knew that something that tastes so amazing is also nutritious?
I can't get enough of strawberries when they're in season in the spring and early summer. We pick pints and pints of strawberries from our garden. Mom uses them to make all sorts of yummy things like strawberry jam, strawberry shortcakes, strawberry smoothies, and strawberry milkshakes. Strawberries are super versatile!
When strawberry season is over, I get really sad. I have to wait another whole year for strawberry season to come back around. Luckily, we can get strawberries from the grocery store, even when they aren't growing in our garden. But they never quite taste as perfectly sweet and fresh as the ones we grow ourselves.
That's why I count down the days all winter long until spring arrives again. As soon as I see the first strawberry plants peeking out of the ground, I get so excited. Not long after that, the first delicious bright red berries will be ready to pick. Strawberry season is finally here again!
I hope reading this made you hungry for strawberries, because writing it definitely made me crave them! Few things make me as happy as going strawberry picking on a sunny day and eating those fresh-picked berries. From their bright color to their unbeatable sweet taste, strawberries are simply the best fruit in the whole world. Or should I say, they're berry amazing! Haha, get it? I
