Making a delicious burger is not as simple as just slapping a patty between two buns. There are a few key steps that can take your burger from average to amazing.
First, choose high-quality meat. I prefer ground chuck with at least 20% fat for a juicy, flavorful burger. Season the meat with salt and pepper, and if you like, add some minced onion and garlic for extra flavor.
Next, shape the meat into patties. Don't overwork the meat or it will become tough. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent it from puffing up during cooking.
Now it's time to cook the burgers. I like to grill mine over high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare. Don't press down on the burgers while they're cooking
or you'll squeeze out all the juices.
Finally, assemble your burger. Start with a toasted bun and add your patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and any other toppings you like. Don't forget the condiments I love a good homemade aioli or BBQ sauce.
