The London Underground is one of the best transport networks in the world with around 24 million journeys made each day, so it’s important that everything runs smoothly. Remember the following to travel like a Londoner. Keep right on escalator (自动梯)

London Underground asks that you stand on the right when using the escalators and leave the left free for others to walk down. If you’re traveling in a big group, or with lots of shopping bags, stand and stay right and let others pass you—it will speed up the process and be a more pleasant journey for everyone! Remember the “rush hour”

The tube network is very busy during the rush hour. You can expect the trains and stations to be overcrowded between 7:30 and 9:30 in the morning and between 17:00 and 19:00 in the evening.

Move down the platform to find more space

As you enter the station platform, you will often find more room if you walk down to the end of the platform. Here, the train carriages are usually the emptiest as well. Carry a bottle of water in the warmer months

The London Underground is over 150 years old and although the trains have been

第3页 共11页

modernized, many still lack air conditioning and cooling units. Make sure you take a bottle of water with you, especially in summer, as the long tube journeys can get very hot. Keep your personal belongings safe

Like any large city be cautious of pickpockets operating in the busy stations and tubes. Carry a bag with zips and keep your personal belongings and valuable items in it to avoid becoming the victims of theft.

Plan your journey on the London Underground in advance with a free tube map. Click here to download.

I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.

War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled(爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.

Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”

That Rashema Melson graduated at the top of her class surprised few people at her high school in Washington, D.C. But that she maintained a 4.0 grade point average and is heading to one of the nation’s top universities while living in a homeless shelter never fails to amaze anyone. It is truly an inspiration.

Eighteen-year-old Melson knows that the story seems improbable, especially for someone growing up in one of the hard parts of the nation’s capital. “Life is not fair, but despite that difficult reality, you must keep striving through the pain and tears,” she said in a graduation speech at Anacostia High School.

Melson’s father was killed before her first birthday, and for the past several years, she has lived with her mother and three brothers and sister in a homeless shelter. Melson said she

considered the shelter a place to stay in, but not a home. “There is no furniture, and no refrigerator. It’s just a place to stay in until you get where you want to be,” she told the reporter. Because of a lot of noise at the shelter, Melson found it difficult to do her homework. That caused her to head to school every morning around 7:00 a.m. and stay for the next 13 hours, taking honors courses and competing in track. But Melson rarely spoke up about her family’s situation nor did she ever complain.

“I know that people look up to me because I always try to be the best example,” she said. Melson said she hopes to study medicine science at Georgetown, although her dreams involve having her own room to study, as well as a place to shower safely. “Never be afraid to go after your dreams, and regardless of the negative word that has been said to us, beat the obstacles and let the sun shine,” she told her fellow graduates. “Each step we take is paved with possibilities. Now go and unlock the door to your future.”

28. Melson did quite well in the high school graduation exam, which_____. A. was big news to her classmates B. was very common to many people C. made her well known in the nation D. made her be liked by her teachers

29. What does the underlined word “striving” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Doing something difficult. B. Understanding the truth. C. Making great effort. D. Finishing everyday task. 30. What can we know about Melson? A. She was afraid to be late for school. B. She went through a very tough life.

C. She sometimes complained about her life. D. She felt aimless about her future.

31. What can we learn from Melson’s words to her fellow graduates? A. Practice makes perfect. B. It is never too old to learn.

C. Experience is the mother of wisdom. D. Nothing is impossible to a willing mind.

A scientist responsible for finding signs of life on other planets has warned that human beings should probably think twice before making contact with aliens(外星人).

Professor Matthew Bailes is based at Swinburne University and is leading Australia’s efforts to find signs of extra-terrestrial (外星的)life. But he warned that making contact with aliens capable of transmitting powerful signals to earth over tens of thousands of light years could lead humans into disaster, because they’re likely to be so much advanced. “The history of

weak civilizations contacting more advanced civilizations is not a happy one!” he said.

Prof Bailes was recently put in charge of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation’s $100m to search for alien life, which is being financed by Russian billionaire Yuri Milner and is backed by Professor Stephen Hawking. The team working on the project will use the Parkes radio telescope, one of the largest in the world, to scan the universe.

Prof Bailes told the news media that accurate computers would have to be installed at Parkes to sort through as many as a billion samples a second to try to detect patterns or likely signals. “There is no manual(指南) on how to find aliens. We’ll have to imagine the sort of transmissions an alien race might send.”

The computers, he warned, would take a year to build, and the project has five years to run. But he said that the signal, if and when it arrives, would likely be quite weak after travelling across such vast distances. He said that scientists hope that aliens will send a pattern human beings would be able to recognize, such as prime numbers. But he warned that we might all be “long dead and buried” before we could work out how to reply and the aliens could get an answer.

32. What did the scientist warn humans? A. Don’t send any signal to the aliens. B. Don’t contact with aliens casually.

C. Don’t reply to any signal the aliens sent.

D. Don’t receive the powerful signals from aliens. 33. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

A. The history of weak civilizations should never be forgotten. B. The aliens are more intelligent than humans.

C. Human civilization needs to be developed urgently.

D. The aliens’ civilizations may be more advanced than humans’. 34. What can we infer about the equipments at Parkes? A. They have scanned the universe for years. B. They are the best equipments in the world. C. They haven’t been installed then.

D. They are capable of detecting the exact target signals.

35. Bailes’ attitude of communicating with the aliens is_______. A. encouraging B. indifferent C. hopeful D. negative 第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
