A single-stroke compressed air motor actuating a thread-cuttingknife in a sewing machine is controlled by a valve having an actuating member engaging acam or abutment which is movable on an operating rod and which is spring-biased in theoperating direction of the rod against a stop fixed on the latter. A cylinder 8, clamped toa sleeve journalling the presser bar 4 of a sewing machine, has a piston rod which carries aknife blade 11. An impulse of compressed air admitted to cylinder 8 serves to actuateknife 11 for severing the thread chain F between a pair of work pieces W1 and W2.Cylinder 8 is connected by a duct to the outlet 19 of a valve 17 having a compressed airinlet 20. Valve 17 is actuated by a linkage to which is pivoted at 36 an arm which carries aroller 18, and which is arranged to pivot clockwise, but not anticlockwise, from thevertical position shown in Fig. 3. Roller 18 normally engages a slidablymounted tubularmember 26 to which is fixed one end of a rod 22. A pad 31 at the other end of rod 22 isengaged by a knee-actuated lever 32. A spring 23, disposed between a collar 24 fixed torod 22 and a cam member 21 slidable on rod 22, biases member 21 against the inner end

of member 26. On actuation of lever 32, to move members 22 and 26 inwardly against thebias of spring 28, roller 18 rides over cam 21 and engages a tubular extention 30 of thelatter, whereby valve 17 is momentarily opened to actuate knife 11. On release of lever32, roller 18 re-engages member 26. In a modification, member 26 is connected by alinkage to a treadle. In a further modification a photo-electric cell 2 is influenced by thegap between the workpieces to energize a solenoidvalve for admitting compressed air toa cylinder, the piston rod of which is rigid with member 26. The arm carrying roller 18 maybe non-pivoted, whereby valve 17 is also momentarily actuated on return movement ofmember 26 for cutting both ends of the thread chain.
