Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly jabbering about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be.
The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, \"You're my knight in shining armor.\"
He was smiling and basking in pride, looking back at her as if to reply, \"You got that right.\"
The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, \"Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.\"
The ticket lady quoted the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lip began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, \"How much did you say?\" The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn't have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn‘t have enough money to take them to the circus?

But our funds were limited, and none of the houses in our price range seemed satisfactory. One agent recommended a house in particular. Although her description sounded wonderful, the price was beyond our range, so we declined(谢绝). But she kept urging us to have a look at last. 6 We finally did and it was love at first sight. It was our home, small and charming, overlooking a quiet lake. Walking through the rooms and talking with the owners, a nice elderly couple, we felt the warmth and happiness of the marriage within that home. As perfect as it was, the price remained too high for us. But every day, we would sit by the lake, looking at the house and dreaming of what it would be like to live there. Days later, we made an offer—, they didn’t laugh at us. They renewed their offer instead. It was offer—far below the asking price. Surprisinglyalso much more than we could afford, but far less than the original asking price. The next day, we got a disappointing message that another buyer had offered a much higher price. Even so, we decided to talk with the owners directly. We made our final offer, which still was thousands of dollars less than the other buyer’s bid(出价). We knew it, but we had to try. Nobody knew if we could get it. Paragraph 1: We went to the owner’s home after we made our final offer. _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: “ The owner looked at us and said, _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ 答案及解析: 13. Paragrph1: We went to the owner’s home after we made our final offer. The other potential buyer came with confidence. The owner smiled, saying, “Tell me the reason why you need this house. The one whose answer satisfies me will take the possession of it.” “For my business.” The buyer answered without any hesitation. After thinking for a while, I replied, “I can feel warmth and love of the marriage in the house, which I have been longing for.” Paragraph2: The owner looked at us and said, “I want to sell my house to you!” A surge(大量,汹涌)(大量,汹涌) of shock hit me. “Why? Last weekend, I went to Mark’s new house nearby a forest for a little get-together. After lunch when I was chatting with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey Thoran, have you ever been to a secret spot?” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishing net and a plastic bucket(桶).

“Hey! What are you guys doing?” Someone suddenly shouted from behind. Mark and Cody’s eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running. I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud. We probably ran for about 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down. I stopped to catch my breath and asked, “Who was that?”
Mark replied, “The most annoying neighbor ever. If he caught up with us, there’s no telling what could happen. He is always making fun of us. For several days,he observed the bank and planned a theft. The next day,he went to work as usual. Everything seemed normal:he joked with his workmates and helped his clients as he always did. But no one noticed that he had brought a bigger suitcase to work, instead of the small one he always carried. At 5:00 pm,the bank closed, and the clerks and the guards had all gone home. However,at that moment,Jack was in the bathroom, and the guards didn't notice him,of course. When the noises coming from the street were replaced by silence and everything turned dark,Jack came out from the bathroom. He first cut the lines of the alarms and monitors with tools from his new suitcase. He was all too familiar with the equipment since he had been working there for 8 years and had been studying the security system for the past 30 days. Using a special key and some other tools,he then easily opened the doors of the safes. The bank's security system wasn't very good, which allowed Jack to take a lot of money. Several minutes later,Jack left the bank with a heavy bag filled with money. 注意: 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1: After Jack had been gone from the bank for a while, the alarms began to ring. ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: But the most unlucky man was the manager of the bank,an old man. ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ 答案及解析: 30. Lorena was desperate to go there because she had to replace a Nike jacket. Lorena was quite happy to be of help. During her last class, the biology teacher made them cut apart dead frogs. For fear of getting blood on Eddie’s jacket, Lorena folded it and placed it on a chair. Then she took the knife and cut the skin quickly. She felt sick opening the frog’s belly. When the bell rang Lorena hurried out because the bus she caught for home left ten minutes after school. She raced to board the bus and found a seat. After a few minutes the driver started the engine and drove away when Lorena looked out of the window and saw Eddie. “The jacket!” she screamed. She shot from her seat and ran up to the driver. “You’ve got to stop! I forgot Eddie’s jacket!” “Who’s Eddie? I don’t know no Eddie,” the driver said crossly. “Sit down.” All that evening she was upset and blamed her biology teacher for her problem. If he hadn’t made them dissect-minded. Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical. Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the comer, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path. Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want 10 nm after him. Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jenny put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of 18 her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really DID have something magic about it. The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Leesaid angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.” 注意: 1所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 左右; 2应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1: Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jenny, waiting for an explanation. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Miss Walker smiled and asked the class to listen to Jenny’s speech first. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 答案及解析: Possible version 1: Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jenny, waiting for an explanation. We’ve never seen Jenny give so terrific a speech.” Whispers went around the classroom, and even Miss Walker nodded with approval. Immediately Jenny finished her speech, a storm of applause erupted from the class. Justin and Mary woke up early, even though they were vacationing at their uncle's lake house. The night before, Uncle Thomas told them about the Foggy Figure that haunts (经常出没于) the lake. Justin and Mary were determined to see the ghostly creature before their vacation was over.
“Is it foggy outside?” Mary asked, as Justin carefully looked out the window. “Yup! Let's go!” Justin let go of the curtain and rushed to the door with Mary.
It was only 5:00 a. m., so everyone else in the house was still asleep. As they moved quietly through the kitchen to the back door, Mary sniffed the air. It had the faint scent (气味) of coffee and something sweet. A sense of hunger struck her. \"Maybe we should first have a breakfast, \"she thought. But she still followed Justin out the door, down the back steps, and out onto the boat dock (码头). The fog had settled over the lake, making it impossible to see anything.
\"Do you see anything?\" Mary asked, moving forward for a closer look. \"Nothing. Do you think Uncle Thomas was just trying to scare us with that story?”
Uncle Thomas did have a good imagination. He'd been telling Justin and Mary stories for years, but this was the first scary story. Mary had a feeling it wasn't made up.
Mary shook her head. “Remember what Uncle Thomas said? The Foggy Figure haunts the lake. We're on the dock. Maybe that's why we can't see him. The people in the story were in boats.”
“You want to take a boat ride on the water?” Justin asked.
Mary looked around, trying to find Uncle Thomas's boat, but the fog was too thick. “Mom and Dad will be really angry if we go out on the lake alone in this fog,” Justin said.
Mary shrugged (in the boat while it's docked. That 耸肩). “Maybe we don't have to go anywhere. We could sit wouldn't be dangerous.”

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a. m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
22
I walked to the door and knocked, \"Just a minute,\" answered a weak, elderly voice. After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase. I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car. She kept thanking me for my kindness. \"It's nothing,\" I told her. \"I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.\" \"Oh, you're such a good man.\" She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, \"Could you drive through downtown?\" \"It's not the shortest way,\" I answered quickly. \"Oh, I'm in no hurry,\" she said. \"I'm on my way to a hospice (临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long. \" I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. At dawn, she suddenly said, \"I'm tired. Let's go now.\" We drove in silence to the address she had given. \"How much do I owe you?\" she asked. \"Nothing.\" I said. \"You have to make a living,\" she answered. \"Oh, there are other passengers,\" I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug.
