第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

My grandmother's Alzheimer's (早老性痴呆病) has taught me to be patient. In the earlier stages of her disease, she frequently called our house. A typical conversation went like this: \"Hello?\" she would say.

\"Hi, Grandma ... how are you?\" I would answer: \"Fine ... Is your mother home?\"

The answer was always \"No\" even if she was. Then,

\"Okay, just checking to see how my girls are doing ...Bye.\" \"Talk to you later, Grandma. Bye.\"

Five minutes later, the phone would ring again, and the conversation would be repeated. After the tenth call, it became much harder for me to be caring and I'd shut the ringer off.

As her disease progressed, the calls increased to 25 a day. At some point I realized how selfish I was not answering my grandmother's calls simply because I felt the repetitive conversation was a waste of my time. What if I missed an emergency call? From then on I picked up the phone: so Grandma would have someone to talk to, even if she couldn't remember whom she had called.

My grandmother also taught me about shame. When my classmates came to a visit seven times, she told the story of how her parrot sings \"Blue Moon,\" and five times she said, \"Hi. How ate you? ... Who are you?\"

My cheeks burned the entire visit. This was not the grandmother I wanted my classmates to know. I wanted them to meet the woman who told jokes, and who baked the best pizza. But I knew that the woman I had been so proud to call my grandmother was now just a memory. I went to bed that night with my cheeks still flaming.

The next morning I woke feeling guilty (內疚). This time I was not ashamed of my grandmother but myself: I couldn't believe that I had let myself hate the woman who had practically raised me, because she had a disease she couldn't control.

Her influence on my life has given me the moral strength necessary to reach my goal. My grandma has given me the patience to work until I achieve my dreams and a strong appreciation for my family. 51. Grandma made calls frequently to __________.

A. find someone to talk to B. make the author become more patient C. find whether the author was patient D. check whether the author's mother was home 52. Why did the author answer her grandma's calls in the end?

36. A. In fact B. In the end C. After all D. As a result

B. One

Growing roots

When I was a child, I had an old neighbour named Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any other doctor I’d ever known. He never shouted at us for playing in his yard. I remember him as a clement(和蔼的) person.

When Dr.Gibbs didn’t work, he planted trees. His house covered an area of ten acres, and his life’s goal was to make it a forest.

He had some interesting theories concerning planting. He came from the “No pains, no gains” school of horticulture(园艺). He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why. He said, “Watering plants will spoil them, and if you water them, each successive tree generation will grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things rough for them and weed out the tiny trees.”

So he never watered his trees. He would plant an oak(橡树),and instead of watering it every morning, he beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did so, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.

I planted a couple of trees a few years ago. I carried water to them for a solid summer, sprayed them and prayed over them. Two years of coddling(娇养) has resulted in trees that expect to be waited on hand and foot. Whenever a cold wind blows in, they tremble their branches. Sissy(胆小的)trees. Dr. Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Now and again, I walked by his house and looked at the trees. They ’re strong now. Big and robust(强健的).

Funny things about Dr.Gibbs’ trees. Adversity(逆境) and deprivation seemed to benefit them while comfort and ease never could.

Life is tough, whether we want it to be or not. Too many times we pray for ease, but that’s a prayer seldom met. What we need to do is to pray for roots that reach deep into the earth, so when the rains fall

and the winds blow, we won’t be swept away.

55. What did the author think of Dr. Gibbs ? He was _______. A. lazy and stubborn

B. kind and wise

D. mean and narrow-minded B. He liked removing its weeds. D. He often beat it to get its attention.

C. generous and open-minded 56. How did Dr. Gibbs plant his oak? A. He was too busy to water it. C. He sometimes watered it. 57. What were the author’s trees like?

A. The more care he gave , the better the trees grew. B. They grew strong and big because of great care.

C. They were very weak in spite of his hard work. D. They often trembled with cold.

58. By introducing Dr. Gibbs’ theory concerning planting, the author implies that _______.

A. No pain, no gains.

B. Life is not easy.

D. Hardship benefits one in life.

C. Experience is the best teacher.

What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It isn’t the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools which make him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigation, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further; he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer he gets to many questions is into a large set of ideas about how the world works.

The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There’s no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration(实证) must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason why investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the Theory of Relativity, arrived at the theory through mathematics. The accuracy(正确性) of his mathematics was

later tested through investigation. Einstein’s ideas were proved to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations(计算) that may test his investigations

59. What makes a scientist according to the passage? A. The tools he uses. C. The way he uses his tools

B. His ways of learning D. The various tools he uses

Do you want to improve the way you study? Do you feel nervous before a test? Many students say that a lack of concentration (注意力) is their biggest problem. It seriously affects their ability to study, so do their test results.

If so, use these tips to help you. Study Techniques

 You should always study in the same place. You shouldn’t sit in a position that you use for another

purpose. For example, when you sit on a sofa to study, your brain will think it is time to relax. Don’t watch TV while you are studying. Experts warn that your concentration may be reduced by 50 percent if you attempt to study in this way. Always try to have a white wall in front of you, so there is nothing to distract (make less concentrated) you. Before sitting down to study, gather together all the equipment you need. Apart from your textbooks, pens, pencils and knives, make sure you have a dictionary. If your study desk or table is needed when you are not studying, store all your equipment in a box beside it.  Your eyes will become tired if you try to read a text which is on a flat surface. Position your book at

an angle of 30 degrees.

 Be realistic and don’t try to complete too much in one study period. Finish one thing before

beginning another. If you need a break, get up and walk around for a few minutes, but try not to telephone a friend or have something to eat. Test-taking Skills  All your hard work will be for nothing if you are too nervous to take your test. Getting plenty of rest is very important. This means do not study all night before your test! It is a better idea to have a long-term study plan. Try to make a timetable for your study which lasts for a few months.  Exercise is a great way to reduce pressure. Doing some form of exercise every day will also improve your concentration. Eat healthy food too.

 When you arrive in the examination room, find your seat and sit down. Breathe slowly and deeply. Check the time on the clock during the test, but not too often. Above all, take no notice of everyone else and give the test paper your undivided attention. 63. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

D. Staying up all night and studying is tiring, but you will learn a lot using this method. 64. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?

60. “…knowing how to investigation, how to discover information, is important to everyone.” The writer says this to show ___________. A. the importance of information

B. the difference between scientists and ordinary people. C. the importance of thinking

D. the difference between carpenters and ordinary people 61. A sound scientific theory should be one that _________.

A. works under one set of conditions at one time and also works under the same conditions at other
