A few years ago, after finishing my Ph. D., I moved to Boston and worked in Cambridge. I bought a bicycle that summer, and I bicycled every day to work. To find my way, I used my phone. It sent me over Massachusetts Avenue, the shortest route from Boston to Cambridge. But after cycling every day on the car-packed Massachusetts Avenue for a month, I took a different route one day. I’m not quite sure why I took a different route that day. I was surprised at finding a street with no cars, unlike the nearby Massachusetts Avenue full of cars. For a whole month, I was so trapped (受困于) in my mobile App that a journey to work became one tiling only: the shortest path. In this single journey, there was no thought of enjoying the road, no pleasure in connecting with nature, no possibility of looking at people in the eyes. But why? Because I was saving lime.
After that experience, I changed. I have changed my research from traditional data-collecting to understanding how people experience the city. I am using computer science tools to perform social science experiments on the Internet. Based on these experiments, I have built a new mapping App, trying to avoid the danger of the single path, to avoid robbing (剥夺) people of fully experiencing the city where they live. 31. D. avoid taking a wrong route

其次节 书面表达 Dear Miss Rose,
I am writing to tell you a piece of good news. Last week our school held a English Speech Competition. I stood out in the competition and won the first place. In my view, all the achievement that I have gained is owed to your help. During your spare time, you often spent so much time in helping me with my spoken English that I made rapid progress. During the competition, I followed your advice on how to behave and how to keep a good state, which led to my success. I’m grateful for your help. Without your help, I couldn’t have won such a prize. I decide that I will make more efforts and try to make greater progress.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Li Hua

M: Good afternoon. everybody and welcome to this class on English words. I hope that all of you can hear me, if not, please let me know. I am Professor John Morris. I’ll be your teacher for the next 13 weeks. As you can probably tell, this is one of the most popular and crowded classes: indeed, every time this course is offered, this room is very full. Why is that? Well, in order to use the English language, it’s very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are formed. Just to mention one figure — and there are many — there are about one million words in English. If you are an English learner, you might wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing, you don’t have to; no native speaker exists who knows all of the words in the English language. Besides, there are shortcuts. Shortcuts? Yes. For example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such as Greek and French, you’ll understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Let me put it this way, knowing the rules will help you to master a large number of words. This is probably the number one reason this class is so popular.
