China Unicom, one of the nation’s three 1eading mobile operators, started trials of its high-speed, third-generation (3G) network on Sunday.
3G lets users enjoy faster wireless data downloads, make video calls and watch TV programs via mobile phones. “The trial network covers 55 cities and will expand to 284 cities by the end of September,” said company president Chang Xiaobing. He said regular service would start at year-end.
China Unicom is the last operator after China Mobile and China Telecom to start trial operation for a 3G service.
However, experts warn that the new service may not give a boost (繁荣) to the telecommunications market due to its high cost. “Developing better applications (such as the text messaging in the 2G era) is important to encourage the 3G business as people are still used to and satisfied with the current voice and text messaging service available in the 2G era,” said Chen Jinqiao, deputy chief engineer from China Academy of Telecommunication Research. “This is the only way the 3G business can really take off,” said Chen, predicting it will take at least five years for 3G to be widely popular in China.
According to an online survey by www.sina.com.cn, the largest Internet portal in China, only 1.9 percent of 363,000 respondents said they “have an idea of what 3G really is”. And although 59 percent of respondents said they would “finally become a 3G subscriber (用户)” in the future, nearly half said the pricing offered by the three telecom carriers was “too high”. According to the survey, in addition to the price and the need to get a new handset, 17.5 percent of respondents said the limited 3G application was the third biggest reason why they wouldn’t rush to 3G.
The ministry expected the three operators to invest 170 billion yuan ($25 billion) in 3G network construction this year.
Despite the fanfare of 3G entering the market, some analysts said it would not give much
boost to China’s telecom carriers. “China’s telecom industry is now entering a downward trend that is likely to last at least one or two years,”said Wang Jinjin, head of Asian telecom research at Swiss bank UBS. “Global experience shows that 3G has not been very helpful in driving carriers’ business growth,” said Wang. 41. What is the best title of the passage?
A. New Trend in Communication C. Trial Service Started in Major Cities 42. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. 3G users may enjoy the regular service by the end of the year. B. China Mobile and China Telecom have already started 3G trial service. C. The trial network will cover all cities by the end of the year. D. People are still satisfied with the 2G service now.
43. What is the most important reason why few people would choose 3G service?
A. The pricing of the 3G service is “too high”. B. People have to get a new handset. C. There is a very limited 3G application. D. Very few people know what 3G actually is.
44. We can conclude from the last paragraph that the attitude of some analysts is _________. C. satisfied D. conservative B

Millions of teenagers have been drawn in by her light smile and beautiful long hair. Many magazines have described her as one of the most charming young actresses of 2004. People say that Liu will be even bigger this year.
\"She is so beautiful on TV. She has the special character to give flesh and blood to the fairy-like and beautiful Wang Yuyan,\" said Yang Mingwei, a Senior 2 boy and Liu fan from Wuyi High School in Fujian.
Currently Liu is filming the TV series \"The Return of the Condor Heroes\" (《神雕侠侣》), another Jin Yong novel. In the show to be aired this year, Liu plays the Little Dragon Girl.
Liu is currently a grade three student at the Beijing Film Academy, the star factory of China. But some people say that her success is only down to her beauty. \"There have been times during filming when I have remained hanging in the air on wires for half a day as the director keeps trying to get the perfect take,\" said Liu recently. Liu was born in Wuhan but moved to the US with her mother when she was 10. Things were not easy at first.
\"When I started at school I went to the wrong classroom for 10 days in a row because my English was so bad. I cried a lot when I saw all the textbooks to read were in English. But I tried my best and eventually overcame the challenges and finally won,\" Liu said. \"The best thing I learnt in the US is to be independent and brave,\" she said.

As children grow up, they become curious about different kinds of things. When they are babies, they are interested in the parts of their bodies and in the smiles of their mothers. The they become interested in the physical world around them: the plants, the animals, the sky. Later, they become interested in the things that people have made: wheels, bicycles, cars. And when they are adults, their curiosity continues. Sometimes this curiosity leads to a career in science. Scientists spend their lives trying to find out about the world. Those who work with the earth sciences study the earth, the oceans, and the skies. Other scientists who study living things work with the biological sciences. A third group of scientists study the physical sciences, e. g. physics, chemistry .
These scientists have already discovered a lot about our world. For example, they tell us why your heart beats fast when you run. They say that when you are quiet, your heart normally beats sixty-five or seventy-five times a minute. Your heart is a pump that pumps blood to all parts of the body. The blood carries oxygen and nutrition. When you run, your muscles work very hard and use the nutrition that the blood carries to them. The muscles need oxygen, too . So your brain sends a signal to the heart. The signal means that the muscles need more nutrition and oxygen. Then the heart beats fast and sends blood quickly to the muscles. It may beat 90 to 140 times a minute.
Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why does the ocean water taste salty
scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask , “What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get saltier every year.” Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question. We know a lot about our world, but there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious.
49. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true? A. People are curious in the same way.
B. People in different countries are interested in different things. C. Men and women are curious about different things.
D. People of different ages are interested in different things 50. When you run, your muscles need ____.
A. more nutrition and oxygen B. more signals C. more salt D. water 51 A rock cracks _____.
A. in wet regions B. in dry regions
C. at very high or very low temperatures D. when salty water falls in
D
Top students feel the pressure
ACROSS China, students are sweating as they prepare for the tough January final exams. Many teenagers write to 21st Century Teens to complain that while they do well in their homework, they cannot get high marks in their exams. They are wondering why.
In a new study this month, US psychologists think they have found the answer. Their experiment will be published in the February issue of the magazine Psychological Science. It helps people understand what restricts intellectual performance.
Researchers report that heavy exam pressure is actually more likely to affect the performance of very good students than average ones. Worried about pleasing others, these students can lose their most valuable intellectual weapon: short-term or working memory. This is their ability to recall numbers and thoughts, while focusing on the problem at hand. According to the study, when extra pressure is put on people with good skills, their performance drops off.
In recent years, psychologists have learnt more about short-term memory. It was once
thought of as a store that could hold one, several or many numbers and words depending on its size. It is now described as more like a mental food processor (食品加工机) that helps shape ingredients while keeping the mind focused on the task at hand.
People with strong working memory skills tend to do well in intellectual ability tests. Their analytical skills and creative thinking depend on this short-term-focused processor.
In the study, researchers tested the working memory of 93 students. They were divided into two groups, with a high and a low working memory.
The students then took two maths tests, under different conditions. One was called a practice test. In the other, the students were told they were part of a team that was depending on them to improve their score in order to win a reward.
The results were striking: the group with high working memory scored about 10 per cent higher than the others on the low-pressure practice test. But the two groups’ scores were about equal when the heat was on to perform.
The study shows how memory performance is affected by fear of failure and the ticking clock, according to the scientists.
52. Many gifted students can't get high marks in the exam because ______. A. they can't concentrate
B. they feel great anxiety that they may fail C. their memory suddenly becomes blank D. they can't fall asleep before exams
53. What's the function of short-term memory mentioned in the passage? A. It is a food processor.
B. It helps people memorize a lot of things in a short time. C. Its size determines one's intellectual performance. D. It enables people to analyse and think creatively. . Which of the following is true?
A. People with low working memory do not suffer from high exam pressure.
B. \"The ticking clock\" mentioned in the last paragraph shows that whether the time limit is
proper is also important in tests.
C. Psychologists used to believe short-term memory let people remember things just as they are.
D. Intellectual ability tests only show how well one's short-term memory works. 55. What do we know about the students who took part in tests? A. All of them got high scores in the second test. B. They have good working memory.
C. They felt heavy pressure in the practice test.
D. Fear of failure had a greater effect on some students. 56. What's the main subject of the story?
A. The relationship between heavy pressure and working memory. B. The reason why heavy exam pressure affects good students more.
C. What is working memory.
D. The recent experiment done on working memory skills.

An altimeter is an instrument used in an airplane to tell the pilot how high he is flying. The altimeter used in most airplanes is a kind of barometer, which, like barometer found in ordinary homes, is a measuring instrument for air pressure. The weight of the atmosphere presses downwards everywhere. At sea level this pressure is more than 14 pounds on every square inch of the surface. The higher you go into the air, the lower the air pressure is. An altimeter measures this air pressure to show the altitude of the airplane, or, how high it is above sea level.
But the altimeter does not show how high the plane is above the ground. A plane might be flying at an altitude of 15,000 feet, but it would be only a thousand feet or so above the ground if the land in that area happened to be 14,000 feet above sea level.
The pilot adjusts his altimeter to the actual sea-level pressure before leaving the airport and then corrects it in flight by new information given to him by radio. He flies high enough to be above any mountain he may pass on his course. The barometer altimeter is correct within about 300 feet.
Another kind of altimeter, the radio altimeter, makes use of radio reflection. It calculates the height of the flying plane by sending out electrical signals to the surface below and measuring the time required for them to bounce back(反弹). It is correct within 15 feet over water, but is not reliable over land. Big planes usually have both kinds of altimeter.
57. Which of the following diagrams gives the correct relationship between altimeters and barometers? (a--altimeters, b--barometers)
58. The following drawing shows a plane flying over a mountain. Which of the heights given in the drawing is given by the barometer altimeter in the plane at this moment?
59. Suppose a plane using a radio altimeter is flying 10, 000 meters above highland which is 4, 000 meters above sea level. What reading will be given by the altimeter? A. 10, 000 meters. B. 4, 000 meters. C. 14, 000 meters. D. 6, 000 meters
60.Suppose a plane using both kinds of altimeters is flying over a mountainous area where the
land rises and falls very abruptly(迅速地). The pilot keeps his plane steady at the same height. What kind of reading will you get on each of the altimeters? A. The readings on both altimeters will remain steady. B. The readings on both altimeters will rise and fall abruptly.
C. The readings on the barometer altimeter will rise and fall abruptly, while that on the radio
altimeter will remain steady.
D. The readings on the radio altimeter will rise and fall abruptly, while that on the barometer
altimeter will remain steady.

We middle school students have had many tests or exams。We have achieved success Meanwhile ,we have suffered from failure。Different students take different attitudes to failure。
Some are in low spirits when they do not do well in the exams。They usually lose heart and no longer study as hard as before。But most students take an active attitude towards failure。They encourage themselves to be self-confident。They try to find out and analyze the causes so that they will no longer make similar mistake。
I agree with those with active attitudes。As we all know, failure is the mother of success。Even great persons have failed many times before success。So we must deal with our failure correctly。
