谢塘镇位于上虞市东北部，北濒杭州湾，南接小越镇，西连崧厦镇，东与宁波余姚黄家埠镇相邻，边盖、越谢、崧谢三条公路贯穿全境，距上虞城区9公里，距杭甬高速道口6公里。晋太傅谢安曾在此居住经商，其后裔也在此定居，并集资沿夏盖湖构筑堤塘抗御海潮，取名谢家塘，镇因塘得名，后人简称谢塘。镇域总面积26平方公里，辖14个行政村、1个居委，现有常住人口2.7万人，外来人口7000多人。

Xietang town is located in the northeast of Shangyu, near Hangzhou gulf on the north, connecting Xiaoyue town on the south, linking Songxia town on the west, neighboring Huangjiabu town of Yuyao of Ningbo on the east. It is 9 kilometers away from Shangyu urban district and 6 kilometers away from the entrance to Hangzhou-Ningbo expressway, with Biangai highway, Yuexie highway and Songxie highway running through the town. Xie An who was the Grand Tutor in Jin Dynasty lived and did business here, and his progeny also lived here and called for funds to construct seawall along Xiagai Lake to combat tide. Therefore the land was named Xie Family Seawall, and in Chinese Pinyin it was Xie Jia Tang because Chinese Pinyin of Family is Jia and Chinese Pinyin of Seawall is Tang and later was briefly called Xietang. The town has the total area of 26 square kilometers, governing 14 administrative villages and 1 neighborhood committee, with the permanent population of 27000 and the floating population of over 7000.
