Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say,“My spoken English is poor.” 71 I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. 72 However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
73 Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter. 74
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. 75
A. The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.
B. They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time. C. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.

D. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
E. However, their spoken English does not have to remain“poor”! F. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.
G. The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned. 参: 71-75 ECFAD

19. Spending money on time-saving services reduces stress and boosts(增进)happiness, according to a new research, but shockingly, few of us do it.
Whillans, a professor at HBS said, “ Buying time helps to protect us from the stress in our lives caused by time pressure, and the feeling that we don’ t have enough minutes in the day to complete our tasks. ’’
The effect was clearest in the Canadian experiment, in which 60 working adults were given $40 to spend in two different ways. One weekend, they were told to spend the money on a material purchase—a gift for themselves. The next weekend, they were instructed to spend the $40 on anything that saved them time, from paying the neighbor ’ s kid to run errands (跑腿)to taking an Uber instead of a bus.
u〇n the day they made the time-saving purchase, they felt happier, in a better mood, and
lower feelings of time stress than on the day they bought a material purchase,” said Whillans.
The biggest surprise to the researchers was how few people would spend money on time-saving services. When they asked 98 working adults how they would spend a “windfall” of $40,only two percent named a purchase that would save them time.
“ One reason,’’ said Whillans,u is that we * re very bad at remembering how much we hate doing certain tasks once the suffering has passed. That makes us less likely to take active steps to avoid that overburdened feeling in the future. ” But another possible cause is good old-fashioned guilt. “If you feel guilty about getting someone to clean your house for you, then you might get less happiness from outsourcing (夕卜包)that task,” said Whillans,”or you might just be less likely to spend your money in that way. ” 8. 20. A cat whisperer is a person who can talk and communicate with cats. Talking to a cat means understanding the spoken and unspoken words of a cat. Cat whisperers can help treat a cat well.
You too can become a cat whisperer if you leam to understand the body language of your cat. Take its eyes for example. If a cat opens her eyes wide and looks right at you, she is attentive and ready to listen to you. When the eyes are half closed, it may mean she is a sleepy cat or she may want you to know, \"I trust you and everything around me. I'm safe. \" When the cat's eyes are clouded, it means that she is ill or may even be in a relaxed mood. When the cat stares at you, she means that she wants you to stay away and does not wish to be disturbed.
Besides the body language, you also need to consider a cat's feelings if you want to become a cat whisperer. For example, if you are petting your cat and you see her tail moving from side to side, it means that she is happy and loves to be petted. But if suddenly you get a bite, it means that she wants you to stop petting at once. A cat kneading on your leg means that she loves and appreciates you.
Cats are not good at showing their emotions like the dogs, but prove to be good friends just the same. With a bit of understanding and patience, you too will become a good cat whisperer.
