Warm weather and sunny days mean it’s barbecue (烧烤) season in the US. These days, when people say they’re going to a barbecue, they usually mean that they’re going to an outdoor event where food is cooked over a grill (烤架). Popular foods barbecue include hamburgers, hot dogs, and grilled vegetables.

Barbecue fans say that this is not real barbecue; it’s just grilling. True barbecue – also called BBQ – is an American tradition that is as old as the country itself.

The first president of the United States, George Washington, wrote about going to a barbecue. Barbecue refers to meat that is cooked for a very long time (sometimes as long as 24 hours) over low heat from a wood fire. The smell of the burning wood adds flavor(味道) to the meat, which becomes soft as it cooks.

Different parts of the US have different ways of making barbecue. In Texas, people often use beef. In North and South Carolina, pork is the most common. In Kansas City, pork ribs (猪肋排) are the specialty. Each region says that its own barbecue is the best. There are barbecue contests every year, and even whole magazines about the art of making great barbecue.

Most Americans don’t have the time or patience(耐心) to dig a hole, fill it with special wood, light a fire and then cook meat carefully over it all day and night. So when they want real barbecue, they go to restaurants that do the hard work for them. For those who want to have their own, easy barbecues, there’s always grilling.

(C)World's hardest word

British people have always been good at saying “I’m sorry”. They used to be so good at it that they would apologize (道歉) for things that weren’t even their fault (错误).

However, the British seem to be losing touch with their art. According to a new book by British writer Max Davidson, instead of saying “I’m sorry” when they do something wrong, British people prefer to choose their words carefully.

In his book, “Sorry...The Hardest Word and How to Use It”, Davidson writes about a number of recent apologies(道歉). One example is of British television host Jeremy Clarkson. He described Gordon Brown, then UK prime minister (首相), as “a one-eyed Scottish idiot (笨蛋)”. (Brown is blind in his left eye.)

Clarkson was forced to apologize. He said: “In the heat of the moment, I made a comment about the prime minister. Now I apologize on reflection.” Davidson says the apology was just “going through the motions (做表面文章)”. Clarkson is not the only one. The best example may come from a UK MP (议员) Tessa Jowell. She said to the public: “If you feel our government falls short of what you expect, then I say sorry for that.”

Jowell said “sorry”. But she is actually saying it’s not the government’s fault but the voters’ (选民的) fault for expecting too much from the government.

Perhaps those people with influence feel they may lose too much by apologizing. But as a teenager, would you really want to lose a close friend, just because you couldn’t say something as simple as, “I’m sorry”? That would be hard to forgive (原谅). 61. What does the first sentence in the second paragraph mean? A. The British are still good at apologizing.

B. The British like to say sorry for everything they have done. C. The British don’t want to say \"I’m sorry\" now. D. The British lose too much by saying \"sorry\".

62. We can tell from the story that Clarkson’s apology was ___________.

A. sincere B. friendly C. rude D. insincere

Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success do not bring lasting happiness. Happiness depends on ourselves. In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.

Another secret to leading a happy life is to be active and have hobbies where you forget your

problems. Many people experience this dancing or playing a sport, such as skating or soccer. 68 . Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. According to studies, people feel good when they volunteer their time to help others. 69 . D. People who have several close friends live happier and healthier lives.

A recent survey shows that most of the school students eat an unhealthy breakfast. Why don’t they have breakfast? Some students who get up too late choose to miss breakfast, for they have no time to eat breakfast. Others go to school without breakfast, because their parents are too busy to prepare the breakfast for them. Some girls eat nothing in the morning in order to keep slim. And some boys likes eating the food from the stands on their way to school. In their opinion, it’s more convenient.

As a result, most of them are not in good health. They feel tired and sleepy in class, so they can’t do well in their studies. Some even fail in the exams.

In fact, having no breakfast is bad for our health. So what should we do? It’s important for us to have enough sleep and get up early so that we can have time to enjoy a wonderful breakfast. What’s more, we can have some fruit and milk at school if possible.

Hope we have a healthy lifestyle. Thank you for listening! 第 9页 共 11页

They came to a house and it seemed that everyone in the house was asleep. Standing at the front gate, one said to the other in a low voice, “You wait here. I’ll go around to the back door and then get into the house.” Suddenly a dog ran out of the house and barked at them. The two men were very frightened and ran away as fast as they could. Finally, they stopped at a lonely place. The man said breathlessly, “ It’s too bad. I hadn’t expected that the dog would understand our words.”
