Settled by the Celts, invaded by the Romans and the Normans, and ruled by the English, Wales’ population has regularly changed over the ages. Wales, particularly South Wales, became a melting pot of European nationalities and cultures. At first workers from England, Ireland and the rural areas of Wales rushed into the coalfields of South Wales. By 1911, workers from Ireland, Italy and Spain had joined the industrial workforce there. Many of these newcomers were prepared to work for less pay.

But during this period, workers, dissatisfied with regular pay cuts, poor safety,

the growing trend of employers to pay workers with tokens (代币), which could only be spent in the company store, returned to the land. In 1891, the rural population of Wales was about 616,000 and by 1911 just over 649,000 people lived and worked in these areas.

The rural population continues to grow slowly even today. People from richer parts of the UK, particularly southern England, are buying holiday or retirement homes in Wales. In some areas this has led to a shortage of affordable housing for local people. This, combined with the lack of employment prospects in rural Welsh communities, has started a new movement of people in search of jobs and homes into the towns and cities of Wales and to other parts of the UK and Europe.

As so many Welsh people have migrated to other countries over the last 200 years, it’s really no surprise that many visitors come to see friends and relatives — there were 229,000 visitors in 1998. These visitors strengthen their links to their land of origin and continue to support the Welsh economy. During the hot summer days, about 28% of the visitors visit the countryside and nearly 70% visit the seaside.

56. Why was South Wales so attractive to people in the early 20th century? A. Because people could buy holiday or retirement homes there. B. Because people could get the highest pay there.

C. Because it was rich in many different kinds of culture.

D. Because its coal industry needed a large number of workers. 57. What does the writer want to tell us in the second paragraph? A. Many people got tired of city life at this time. B. Welsh workers couldn’t get any pay for their work.

C. The rural population of Wales didn’t decline at this time. D. The working conditions were terrible at this time.

Reading is the key to success in all school subjects. With a bit of creativity, you can help your child enjoy reading more, and encourage him to do more!

Buy or borrow a lot of “fun” books. Choose books that are slightly below his level of reading ability. Don’t forget what your child likes to do when choosing books for him. Don’t comment about the books. Simply leave the books lying on the table where your child is sure to see them. Computer games are not as harmful as most parents usually think them to be. Instead, you should take advantage of your child’s love of computer games to purchase those that require a lot of reading and avoid those that are simply computerized video games.

Buy your child a bedside reading lamp, or a tiny book light. Tell him that from

now on, he must be in bed by a specific time (say 8:30) and that he can either sleep or read. Most kids will do anything else rather than go to sleep, so there’s a chance you’ll create a new bedtime reading habit.

Many children will read when they are sitting alone having a snack, or when they have a few minutes of unplanned free time. Put a box of books and magazines near the kitchen table so that reading material is accessible.

Often, once children learn to read independently, parents stop reading to them. This change of routine causes great sadness to a child who has come to love falling asleep as you read. Even a teenager will enjoy being read to if you pick books that interest him. Select books together, and make sure they’re ones you enjoy as well, so your enjoyment will come through as you read to them.

60. To make children become interested in reading, parents should _______. A. tell them what they can learn from these books B. choose books based on their interest

C. choose the easiest books for them to read D. always read books together with them

61. Which of the following is NOT what parents are advised to do?

A. Reduce children’s sleeping time. B. Read to children when possible. C. Have reading material available. D. Pick the right computer games. 62. What attitude do most parents hold towards children playing computer games? A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful. 63. The main idea of the passage is to ________. A. help children succeed in school subjects

B. give parents advice on how to educate children C. remind parents of the importance of reading D. teach parents how to encourage children to read

When I was young, I thought that boys and grown men shouldn’t cry. The tears were signs of being weak. A man isn’t supposed to be like that. This was even strengthened in my young mind with the popular song, Boys Don’t Cry, in the early 1980s. But just last June, I discovered that courage wasn’t all about trying to keep all the pain inside. Courage wasn’t all about trying to hide the tears. It was the opposite — the tears reinforced (加强) the heart’s courage. And I saw this in my father.

My 18-year-old sister eloped and with it, I saw how vulnerable (脆弱的) my father’s heart was. We were used to seeing him as a strong figure and an iron-willed father. For three days after my sister eloped, he wouldn’t talk. He would just sit quietly outside our house in the dark. On the fourth night, I sat beside him and asked him to tell me what he felt about everything.

It has been years since I have laid my hand on my father’s shoulder as we have drifted farther while I am growing up. That night, I sensed my father trying to control his pain and I wanted him to be able to let it out. We all cried over what had happened except him.

The simple touch and my words “Dad, it’s not your fault” broke my father’s

dam. In the darkness, he began to cry. I felt his shoulders shaking as he whispered, “Where did I go wrong? All I ever wanted was for my children to grow up right. Why couldn’t your sister wait? How can she go away with such a boy?”

I understood then why he preferred to be in the dark. By being there, he hoped to spare his family’s feelings. His tears, though we didn’t see them before that night, were there all the same. I saw his courage that night when my father cried with my hand on his shoulder, and understood his pain.

64. We can know from the first paragraph that ______.

A.Boys Don’t Cry was popular in the early 1980s B. the tears are not the signs of being weak C. the author often cried when he was young D. men are supposed to keep their secrets

65. According to the author, people with courage ______. A. should try to keep all the pain inside B. shouldn’t be so strict with their children C. should do what they can to show they are brave D. shouldn’t hide the tears if they want to cry

66. The author’s father didn’t cry at first because ______.

A. he felt sorry for what he had done before B. he was very disappointed with his daughter

C. he should set an example to people around D. he had been trying to control his great pain

67. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. The day father cried. B. My great father. C. Never lose heart. D. Boys don’t cry.

Scientists are developing the next generation of robot-driven cars and predict they could be carrying humans around by the year 2030.

The first wave of intelligent robot cars, capable of understanding and reacting to the world around them, will be tested this November in a competition run by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Scientists are developing vehicles which will not only be driven by robots independently, but will be able to operate in a complicated city environment. “In the past it was sufficient for a vehicle just to perceive the environment,” said Sebastian Thrun, a professor at Stanford University.

“The new challenge will be to understand the environment. The robot must be able to recognize another car, to understand that it is moving and that it will interact with it as it gets closer.” Stanford’s entrant (参加竞赛者)“Junior” is a changed 2006 Volkswagen Passat whose steering, throttle (节流阀) and brakes all have been modified by engineers.

Lasers fitted on the car bumpers, radar and global positioning systems feed data into the on-board computer to determine its location and position. Thrun predicted that advances in artificial intelligence would lead to driverless cars on the roads by 2030.

“Today they can drive about 100 miles, by 2010 I expect this to go 1,000 miles, by 2020 up to a million miles,” he said. “By 2030 you’ll be able to see them on the highway, with driving reliability that will beat humans.”

“We believe this technology will affect all of us. It is going to have enormous significance for people who can’t drive because of disabilities or because they are ill or impaired.” Thrun said he believed robot-driven vehicles would be deployed in war zones before they were seen in everyday civilian environments. 72. Compared with the old robot-driven cars, the new ones _____. A. can understand orders from humans

B. can perceive the environment dearly

C. are modified to be completely computer-controllable

D. not only can understand the environment but also can react to it

73. The underlined word “sufficient” in the third paragraph means “_____”. A. unbelievable B. enough C. wonderful D. useful

75. We can infer from the fifth paragraph that _____. A. the car must be driven by a robot B. there is a computer in the car
