A

The 1987 season was a tough year. Up to that point, I was at the top of the world of racing. I had won three NASCAR Winston Cup championships. Racing had been very good to me. But in 1987, I was with a new team, and things weren't going very well. It had been expected that we were the dream team. I had the best backing from the Hendrick Motorsports Group, an excellent sponsorship, and the best engine builder in racing. However, going into the last part of the season, we still had not won a race. In addition to my not winning races, we found out that Stevie, my wife, was pregnant. All of this was emotionally tough for me. Stevie had three miscarriages previously. She had never been able to carry a baby to full term, and I felt badly for her.

Now she was not able to go to the track each weekend with me. Stevie has always been such a part of my life and my racing career. I had not experienced life at the track without Stevie. She has stood by me with

2

much encouragement through the ups and downs and boos and cheers of fans. It was tough on me to be racing without her there.

On September 17, we were blessed with our first child, Jessica Leigh. I had to leave to go on to the next race later that week. The race was at Martinsville, Virginia, where I had won several times before. But I had no expectations of winning this time. As the race progressed, I really had no hope of winning, as I was a lap down with just twenty-five laps to go. Dale Earnhardt was leading. When he stopped for fuel, I got back on the lead lap. Then a caution came out with about seven laps to go. On the restart, I was in third place behind Earnhardt and Terry Labonte. Both were previous champions and were tough racers. There was no way I was going to get by them with just a few laps to go. They could make it very difficult to get around them. On the final lap in the final turns of 3 and 4, Terry had gotten up beside Dale and left just a little opening for me to pass both of them, beating them to the finish line. I won my first race of the year! It was much more special, though, than just being my first win of the season and my first victory with the new team. For earlier that Sunday morning, appearing from nowhere, I was surprised to find a little rosebud in the seat of my car with a note that said, \"Win one for me, Daddy!\" My first race of the season was sweetened by it occurring on the same day that I was first called \"Daddy.\"

21. Which one is not the reason why the author felt tough in the 1987 season?

A. He hadn’t won a race with his new team.

B. The Hendrick Motorsports Group didn’t want to sponsor him any longer. C. His wife was not able to go to races with him. D. His wife, Stevie, is going to give birth to a baby.

22. In the author’s opinion, which one contributes most to his success?

A. The active cooperation from his teammates. B. The affectionate support from his family.

C. The excellent sponsorship from the Hendrick Motorsports Group. D. The same racing place where he had won a few times before. 23. What’s the best title of this passage?

A. Win with the new team B. Life is sweet

C. Win one for me, Daddy D. Nothing is impossible

One day your pocket might power your smart phone. Soon you may never have to worry about your smart phone running out of juice. Your clothing will simply power it back up for you. That's the word from scientists at China's Chongqing and Jinan Universities in a study just published in the journal ACS Nano.

Researchers have been hard at work during the last few years trying to create wearable energy, or clothes that can charge things. The assumption is simple. People today rely heavily upon devices such as smart phones and tablets. And they're looking for ways to recharge these devices on the go. So if you could design clothing fabric that could make use of solar power —one of the most widely available and inexhaustible renewable energy sources — you'd be able to charge your various devices with ease.

Scientists have had some past success creating energy-harvesting fibers. But there was always one problem when they tried to fashion these threads into self-powered smart clothes: The fibers they designed got damaged during the clothing manufacturing process, namely during the weaving and cutting. The Chongqing and Jinan University scientists say they've solved this problem because the energy-collecting and energy-storing threads they created are highly flexible — each individual thread is easily bendable, and not simply the fabric as a whole.

The team's sample textile can be fully charged to 1.2 volts in 17 seconds by exposure to sunlight — enough voltage that your future smart T or smart dress might be able to power small electronics. It's durable,

3

too; their research showed there was no descent in the fabric after 60 days. But don't worry that this means the fabric is similar to rough cloth. The scientists note their textile can be fashioned into numerous different patterns, and tailored into any designed shape, without affecting performance.

24. What does the underlined phrase \"running out of juice\" in paragraph 1 mean?

A. Being lacking in energy. B. Wanting to have some juice. C. Being picked out of a drink. D. Having some water running out. 25. Why could smart dress charge a phone?

A. A solar cell is attached to the dress.

B. The fabric of the textile contains current. C. The fabric of the textile is easily bendable.

D. The fabric of the textile could collect and store the solar energy. 26. What is the scientists’ attitude towards the scientific technology?

A. Optimistic. B. Pessimistic. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful.

C

One morning a few years ago, Harvard President Neil Rudenstine overslept. For this busy man, it was a sort of alarm: after years of non-stop hard work, he might wear himself out and die an early death. Only after a week’s leave—during which he read novels, listened to music and walked with his wife on a beach—was Rudenstine able to return to work.

In our modern life, we have lost the rhythm between action and rest. Amazingly, within this world there is a universal but silly saying: “I am so busy.”

We say this to one another as if our tireless efforts were a talent by nature and an ability to successfully deal with stress. The busier we are, the more important we seem to ourselves and, we imagine, to others. To be unavailable to our friends and family, and to be unable to find time to relax—this has become the model of a successful life.

Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We miss the guide telling us where to go, the food providing us with strength, the quiet giving us wisdom.

How have we allowed this to happen? I believe it is this: we have forgotten the Sabbath, the day of the week—for followers of some religions—for rest and praying. It is a day when we are not supposed to work, a time when we devote ourselves to enjoying and celebrating what is beautiful. It is a good time to bless our children and loved ones, give thanks, share meals, walk and sleep. It is a time for us to take a rest, to put our work aside, trusting that there are larger forces at work taking care of the world.

Rest is a spiritual and biological need; however, in our strong ambition to be successful and care for our many responsibilities, we may feel terribly guilty when we take time to rest. The Sabbath gives us permission to stop work. In fact, “Remember the Sabbath” is more than simply permission to rest; it is a rule to obey and a principle to follow.

27. The “alarm” in the first paragraph refers to “_______”. A. a signal of stress B. a warning of danger C. a sign of age D. a spread of disease

28. According to Paragraph 4, a successful person is one who is believed to _______. A. be able to work without stress B. be more talented than other people C. be more important than anyone else D. be busy working without time to rest 29. Some people feel guilty when taking time to rest because they _______. A. lack a sense of responsibility B. lack the ambition to be successful

C. fail to realize that religions force them to rest

4

D. fail to realize that rest is an essential part of life 30. What is the main idea of this passage? A. We should balance work with rest.

B. The Sabbath gives us permission to rest. C. It is silly for anyone to say “I am so busy”.

D. We should be available to our family and friends. 第二节:(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白出的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Tips for waiting in line

We’ve all been there – when lining up at the supermarket checkout counter, the lines next to us always seem to be moving faster than the one we are standing in.

Now The New York Times has put together the research of multiple scientists to give you some insights (深入了解) into the math and psychology of queuing. 31 . 32 US mathematician Dan Meyer believes that a cart (购物车) full of items doesn’t tell the whole story. “Every person requires a fixed amount of time to say hello, pay, say goodbye and clear out of the lane,” he said. And that amount of time is an average of 41 seconds per person. 33 . This means if there are five people ahead of you, each with 10 items in their carts, the waiting time will be 355 seconds. But if there is only one person ahead of you, with 50 items in the cart, the waiting time is 191 seconds. You do the math. Study the customers

How many people are ahead of you is one thing, and who they are is another. For example, if they are old people – and this is not ageist (年龄歧视的) – they tend to move slower and delay the checkout process. 34 . For example, four bottles of the same milk will definitely go faster than four completely different items.

Choose a “serpentine line”

In some places, there may just be one line leading to several checkout counters. The person at the head of the line goes to the next available counter. This is known as a “serpentine (蛇形的) line”.

You should always choose a serpentine line because even if one of the cashiers or customers is slow, it won’t hold up an entire line. 35 According to Robert Samuel, a US science writer, around 90 percent of people are right-handed, which means they tend to naturally go to the right. So heading to the opposite direction will give you a better chance of finding a faster line.

A. Go left B. Go right

C. Pick someone with a full cart

D. The items in their carts are also important

E. The number of the items in their carts really matters

F. On the other hand, the time that each item takes to be rung up is only three seconds

G. It has also offered tips on picking the fastest line no matter if you’re lining up in a supermarket, a bank or anywhere else

第二节:读后续写(满分25分) 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When the one-year anniversary of my mother's passing came around, I found myself in the kitchen preparing some of her favorite dishes. I hadn't planned this, but there I was one hot August afternoon, making her famous soup from the turkey.

As I poured myself into cooking, some of the deep sadness I was experiencing at this one-year mark

7

moved through me. I loved my mom's turkey soup, how she cooked the egg noodles right in the broth(肉汤), and how they soaked it up and tasted almost like dumplings. I remembered the time she made some especially for me. It was summer then, too, and I had a terrible head cold. She arrived unexpectedly one afternoon at my work place with a huge jar of her turkey noodle soup. I thought about the bread she used to bake and about how much butter she would slather on it, and how we loved to dip it into the broth. I began to feel a little more cheerful amidst the pain of losing her.

While the noodles boiled in the broth in my kitchen, I realized that I was reconnecting with my mother through food. I laughed a bit at myself when I reflected on all the dishes I had cooked that week. Without knowing it, I had created a beautiful ritual to honor my mother and to comfort myself at this vulnerable time. I suddenly felt my mother at hand and was filled with her presence. I was so uplifted and excited that I began talking to her, imagining she were there.

\"What else should we make?\" I asked of us both, wanting to keep the ritual from ending. \"Irish Potato Pancakes,\" was the reply.

I hesitated. The thought of these brought up another loss. The last time I made potato pancakes was two and a half years ago. I had taken off my engagement ring to make the dough, and never found it again. Since then, I resisted using that recipe even though I really liked those pancakes. It's sort of silly, but whenever I considered making them, I felt resentful of their participation in my loss, as if they were partly to blame.

My mom should know better than to suggest these, I thought. (I don't even remember her ever making them.) She knew how upset I was about losing my ring. I had always called her whenever I lost something, even when I was away at college, even from across the country, even when I traveled abroad. She had a knack for helping me find my way to lost things, except for this time.

注意:

1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

2. 应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1:

But despite these hesitations, I found myself caught up in the joy and celebration of the moment, and I reached for the cookbook without another thought of the ring. ______________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

To call on more students to read more widely in their spare time, our school launched a campaign of “Reading Day” on June 1st in our school library. Students of the whole school took part.

In the morning, our principal delivered a passionate speech to advocate reading hungrily and decided on a novel to read together. After that, all the students were divided into groups to read different chapters of “Gone with the wind” and exchanged their ideas about it. In the end of the activity, the students attended a knowledge contest on the novel.

This successful event not only impressed on the students the significance of reading but also aroused their interest in it.

读后续写:

One Possible Version: Paragraph 1:

But despite these hesitations, I found myself caught up in the joy and celebration of the moment, and I reached for the cookbook without another thought of the ring. My mom did love Irish things, and these were delicious. I opened the large coffee-table cookbook and turned to the pancake recipe. At once, something at the bottom of the page caught my eye... It sparkled! I grasped in utter amazement! There, pressed into the pages of this book, was my diamond ring! Paragraph 2:

Chills ran up and down my body as my mind raced to ponder how this was at all possible. Hadn't I used the book for other recipes in the course of almost three years? Wouldn't the ring have slipped out during the packing and unpacking of two household moves? Hadn't I checked the book for the ring when I had lost it? My mind was subdued as my heart overflowed with the magic of gratitude and wonder. I slipped my ring onto my trembling hand, and a smile filled my soul as I whispered, \"Thanks Mom.\" That day, I made potato pancakes in the shape of hearts.

W: How much are the tickets for the match? M: The cheapest are £21 and the next ones are £24.

W: That’s not bad. Last time I paid £28. We won’t save much if we get two cheaper tickets. M: That’s true. Let’s go for the more expensive ones then. (Text 3) W: Hello? David? Thank goodness, you turned your cell phone on. I locked my keys in the car. Can you wait about an hour? I called the repairman and he’s on his way. M: Don’t worry, then. I’ll just take a taxi. W: I’m really sorry. (Text 4)

M: Pardon me, would it be possible to get a table by the window? My co-workers and I are celebrating a colleague’s promotion, and we’d like the nicest view. W: Let me check the reservation book to make sure that the table is free. M: OK. (Text 5)

M: We’re moving very slowly again now. I’m going to miss my meeting if we don’t speed up soon. W: Yes, we seem to be late most days at the moment. (Text 6)

M: Hello, Erin. What are you up to? W: Well, I want to plan for a trip this year and I’m just thinking about when I should take my holidays. M: I see. I guess the obvious times are Easter or around Christmas and New Year’s. W: Um … So when is Easter this year?

W: At lunchtime, I watched that good cooking show, Chef’s Special, and I’ve got some great ideas for some meals we can try out for dinner.

M: Well, that sounds good. So what’s on your list? W: Let’s see. We’ve got some meat at home already, but we need something for a salad. We need some tomatoes, carrots and green onions. M: Sounds very healthy. W: The apples look really good today. Let’s pick up some, too. Plus we need to get some bananas. Would you like some milk or cheese? M: No, they are not my taste. W: Then can you get a box of ice cream? M: Sure, I love ice cream best. W: I think that’s everything we need. Let’s go home and cook dinner.

(Text 9)

W: Hello. Care for the Community. How can I help you?

M: Oh, good morning. I’m interested in doing some part-time work for your organization. My name is Philippa Tailor. I’m a student at Brookfields University. W: Good morning, Philippa. When would you be available to work? Days? Evenings?

M: Well, days would be difficult, as I have classes then. I was thinking maybe a couple of evenings a week, or maybe three. But no more than that. W: OK. Philippa, why are you interested in working for us?

M: Well, I major in Social Care Studies. I’m hoping to apply for a job in social care when I graduate, and this would give me some work experience in this field. W: Great. And what makes you suitable for this kind of work, do you think?

M: Well, I have very good communication skills. That’s my strong point, I think. And I’m a good listener. Sometimes you can help by just listening, you know. W: I agree. Hmm, right. What I’d like to do, if it’s OK with you, is fix an appointment so we can meet and talk about this some more. It wouldn’t be anything formal, not an interview or anything like that. Er, how are you fixed for Tuesday 9th September at 4:30?

M: Ah, I’m sorry. I have a lesson then. Would Wednesday be possible? W: The 10th? Yes, that would be fine. (Text 10)

W: This summer I took part in a really interesting project. It’s called One-Day Clean-up and its aim is to clear the world’s natural environments of rubbish. I heard about its work from my neighbors who used to take part some years ago. I thought it would be fun and persuaded a couple of my cousins to come along with me. But it wouldn’t matter if you took part on your own. You’d soon make friends with other people there. Most of the people there were teenagers. We were a very international group in my team. Over half of the people there were from Australia, like me, but there were also people from China, Thailand and the USA. Most teams were working on the south coast of the country, but mine was working on the east. We had to pick up all the rubbish that we could find on the seaside. It has all made me realize how important it is for everyone to be aware of the environment. I’m determined now to get my family to recycle as much as possible. It’ll be worth it if we can make our seas safer for all those beautiful sea animals. So, if you’d like to join me taking part in this Day next year, it’ll be on January 11th. The focus on that day will be on getting rubbish out of rivers. There’ll be a day later in the year on cleaning up woodlands.
