18 (responsible) do you have as future business leaders? If you become parents, 19 will you manage to do for your family?”
After a while, they replied to 20 with a question \"You're the professor. Can't you just tell us?” Thus I began
to have a conversation with students, colleagues, and thousands of people in public and private organizations 21 I
had been engaged in ever since. Over the last twenty years, we have surveyed hundreds of undergraduates.
We wanted to find out how these students thought 22 work, life, and family 一 and how their ideas varied. In
1992,three fourths of the 23 (survey) students said they planned to have children. Twenty years 24 (late),
that number dropped to less than half. 25 most striking one was that they didn't want to have more than two children.

第一节阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A
I believe that families are not only blood relatives, but sometimes just people that show up and love you when no one else will.
In May, 1977,I lived in a Howard Johnson's motel. Dad's second marriage was in trouble and my stepmother had
kicked us both out of the house the previous week. Dad had no idea what to do with me. And that's when my other family showed up.
Barbara and Roland Beach took me into their home because their only daughter, Su, my best friend, asked them 3o.
Barb starched (给 上梁)my drill team skirts same as Su's. She made sure I had lunch money, doctors'
appointments, help with homework, Jordache jeans, puka shell necklaces and nightly hugs. Barbara and Roland
attended every football game where Su and I marched, every drama performance I was in even when I had no speaking
lines. As far as I could tell, there was no difference between Su and me: I was their daughter, too.
When Su and I lett for colleges, they kept my room the same for the entire four years I attended school. Recently,
Barb presented me with an insurance policy they bought when I first moved in with them and had continued to pay on for 23 years.
The Beaches knew all about me when they took me in. When I was seven,my mother died of a self-inflicted( > 伤
白勺)gunshot wound and from then on my father relied on other people to raise his kids. By the time I went to live with the Beaches,I believed that life was entirely unfair and that love was tenuous and untrustworthy. I believed that the
only person who would take care of me was me. Without the Beaches,I would have become a bitter, negative woman. They gave me a home that allowed me to
grow and change. They kept me from being paralyzed (雍疾白勺)by my past, and they gave me the confidence to open my heart.
I believe in family. For me,it wasn't the family that was there on the day I was born, but the one that was there
for me when I was living in a Howard Johnson's motel.

What happened to that brilliant idea that you once had? Did you ignore it because you thought that it was just a
little thought? Have you ever considered what that little thought would have become if you had acted on your instincts
or if you had paid more attention to it?
Imagine that you are sitting at home watching television or reading a book, suddenly a light bulb is turned on in
the dark tunnel of your mind as a thought or an idea crosses your mind. The thought catches your attention but seems
so meaningless and you are tempted to throw it away, but wait a minute!
That thought could be the potential beginning of the success you have so much yearned for. As the thought
crosses your mind, your senses become aware and you suddenly see a possibility, a realization, a solution, a
conclusion,or find the answer to a problem whose solution has long puzzled you.
This becomes an AHA (惊喜)moment and everything freezes around you as you excitedly try to grasp the
practicality of that little but powerful thought.
Your self-confidence and enthusiasm increase as you become conscious of the great possibilities that can arise if
that little thought is acted upon. This becomes the moment to build upon that thought and to write down any ideas that
are streaming from that little thought for later review.
Seemingly meaningless little thoughts or ideas when acted upon have a potential to explode into great projects.
Many successful projects have been born from the little positive thoughts that were carefully nurtured and recognized as tickets to great things.
Don't waste an opportunity to act on a potentially brilliant idea. You don't have to wait for a major peer in order
for a major idea,a master strategy,or approval from your peers in order for you to act on that little thought.
That little thought or idea is the beginning of great things if you decide to follow it through. 【语篇解读】你曾经想到过的那个非凡的主意后来怎样了?你是否因为觉得那只是个小小的念头而将其忽略了

tt was New Year's Night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his sad eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies on the surface of a clear calm lake. Then he cast them on the earth,
where few more hopeless people than himself now moved towards their certain goal 一 the tomb. He had already
passed sixty of the stages leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets. Now his
health was poor, his mind vacant, his heart sorrowful, and his old age short of comforts.
The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed
him at the entrance of the two roads 一 one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and
resounding (回口向)with soft,sweet songs; the other leading to a deep,dark cave,which was endless,where poison
flowed instead of water and where devils and poisonous snakes hissed(发出晰晰声)and crawled.
He looked towards the sky and cried painfully, ‘‘O youth, return! O my father, place me once more at the
entrance to life, and t'll choose the better way!,,But both his father and the days of his youth had passed away.
The clock in the high church tower struck and the sound made him remember his parents' early love for him. They
had taught him and prayed to God for his good. But he chose the wrong way. With shame and grief he dared no longer
look towards that heaven where his father lives. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he burst out a cry: ‘‘Come back,my early days! Come back!,,
And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year's Night. He was still young
though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which
leads to the peaceful and sunny land.

In the United States, we love to try new ways to exercise. When an exercise program promises to help us lose
weight or get fit, it can become very popular quickly. Such a popular exercise trend is CrossFit. The number of
CrossFit centers doubles every two years. What began in a house in California in the 1970s is now international. There
are more than 8,500 CrossFit gyms worldwide. People who practice CrossFit live in South America, and across Europe and Asia too.
CrossFit is a whole body workout. It is known as one of the hardest training programs in the exercise world. A
good word to describe that is hard-core. The hard-core Crossfitters include the U. S. Marines,
professional sports
teams, fire departments and police forces. And it is also popular with office workers. CrossFit uses weight training and
basic movements like running and jumping. The movements are simple but intense.
Kate is a trainer in Washington. She says the main goals are to get stronger and to improve cardio(有氧运动)or
the rate the heart beats. “So you can have powerlifting movements, and you can have body weight stuff. We can have
what we call single modal (单一模式),such as running, rowing, swimming, and anything can be thrown into a
workout with CrossFit. ”
Most CrossFit gyms are filled with men. But women also practice this extreme workout. Samantha has been doing
CrossFit for about six weeks with the goals of losing weight and gaining strength. “I think there are so many things
that I didn't know I could do,and I am already making progress that I didn't expect to make as quickly as I made it. So
I think I am going to have to revise my goals a little bit. ”
But critics say CrossFit has a high rate of injury. Members can experience muscle damage, especially shoulder
injuries. CrossFit athletes, however, say that a good trainer can help people work out safely and avoid injuries.

If your life feels like it is lacking the power that you want and the motivation that you need, sometimes all you
have to do is change your point of view. By training your thoughts to concentrate on the bright side of things, you are
more likely to have the motivation to follow through on your goals. You are less likely to be held back by negative ideas
that might limit your performance.
Your life can be enhanced, and your happiness enriched, when you choose to change your perspective. You must
go in the direction of your hopes and aspirations. Begin to build your confidence, and work through problems rather
than avoid them. Remember that power is not necessarily control over situations, but the ability to deal with whatever comes your way.
Always believe that good things are possible, and remember that mistakes can be lessons that lead to discoveries.
Take your fear and transform it into trust; learn to rise above anxiety and doubt. Turn your “worry hours\" into ‘‘productive hours,,. Take the energy that you have wasted and direct it toward every worthwhile effort that you can be
involved in. You will find happiness when you adopt positive thinking into your daily routine and make it an important part of your world.

There is a big group of people who is sometimes called “Ant Tribe” in Shenzhen. Most of them are the generations
after 80s and 90s. They have graduated from university, most of whom are even the only child of the whole family.
Shenzhen is attracting thousands and thousands of graduates across the country every year. With most expensive
house price and highest living cost, a little part of them has left after one or two years. But every year, there is still a
steady stream of graduates crowding into the city. They are paid the same as rural migrant workers or even lower ;
they live in the noisy “urban village” located in the suburb of the city, get up early in the morning and take at least 50
minutes or more in the “Hell Line” of crowed metro to work in CBD(中(、商务区).They have a ringing title “white collar”, which make them differ from the rural migrant workers. The so-called “spoiled, arrogant and selfish”
generation is like a group of ants in the bustling metropolis(大者口市),as tiny as dust.
But these ants still make a determination to leave the warm and safe arms of parents and stay here in Shenzhen no
matter how hard it is,just for the humble(卑微白勺)dreams and beautiful visions of bright future hidden in their minds.
Of course they are humble ants, but they never stop the struggling footsteps and keep sailing though in storms. Their
dreams are the lamp that lightens the road to future. They are diligent and hard-working ants; they are strong-minded
ants; and they never give up their dreams and hope to hunt for happiness in life.
Just like the song describing the life in Beijing by Chinese rock singer Wang Feng, “We laugh and
cry here, we
live and die here, and we seek and lose ourselves here. When I have to leave the world one day, please bury me here as
I really miss the place of Beijing. ” I think this is also true to the young generation in Shenzhen. No matter how hard
the life is, those ants still love the place as it is the place that burns their youths, flies their dreams and starts their new journey of lives.

Where did you feel the love? Perhaps you got ‘‘butterflies in your stomach\" or your heart raced with excitement.
When a team of scientists in Finland asked people to map out where they feit different emotions on their bodies, they
found that the results were surprisingly consistent.
People reported that happiness and love sparked(发火花)activity across nearly the entire body, while depression
had the opposite effect: It dampened(抑制)feelings in the arms, legs and head. Danger and fear triggered strong
sensations in the chest area, the volunteers said. And anger was one of the few emotions that activated the arms. The
scientists hoped that these body emotions may one day help psychologists diagnose (诊断)or treat mood disorders.
“Our emotional system in the brain sends signals to the body so we can deal with our situation,” says Lauri Nummen,a psychologist at Aalto University who leads the study. “For example, you see a snake and you feel fearful,
and your nervous system increases oxygen to your muscles and raises your heart rate so you can deal with the threat.
It's an automated system. We don't have to think about it. ”
That idea has been known for centuries. But scientists still don't agree on whether these bodily changes are
distinct for each emotion and whether this pattern serves as a way for the mind to consciously identify emotions.
To try to figure that out,Nummen and his team ran a simple computer experiment with about 700 volunteers from
Finland,Sweden and Taiwan. The team showed the volunteers two blank silhouettes(剪影)of a person on a screen and
then told the subjects to think about one of 14 emotions: love, disgust, anger, pride, etc. The volunteers then painted
areas of the body that feit stimulated by that emotion. On the second silhouette, they painted areas of the body that got
deactivated during that emotion. ‘‘People find the experiment quite amusing,” Nummen tells Shots. ‘‘We kept the questions online so you can try
the experiment yourself. ”

A man named Rick finally got to experience what Mother's Day feels like this year, thanks to 13 little ducks that
thought he was their mother and followed him around all day. The unusual story began when the mother of the young
chicks disappeared soon after laying the eggs. In order to save them, Rick, who would not tell his last name or
location, decided to place them in an incubator. Therefore, when the chicks hatched, the first large moving object they
saw was Rick and they immediately concluded that he was their “mother”.
While this may seem odd,it is quite common among animals. Known as imprinting (印记),it is a natural
biological phenomenon that occurs in newly born birds and mammals, allowing them to form a bond with their mothers
as well as providing them with information about their own identity. For birds like ducks, geese and turkeys that start
walking as soon as they hatch, the imprint occurs instantly, which is what happened in this case. What's amazing is that researchers have discovered that young birds imprint themselves to the first moving thing
they set eyes on, even if it is a lifeless object. During their study they found young chicks attach themselves to
gumboots, balls and even an electric train.
The disadvantage of imprinting is that young animals have a hard time separating themselves from their adopted
“mothers”. That means that they are often unable to return to the wild or socialize with their own species. This is the
reason why researchers use new methods when raising animals in captive breeding(圈养繁殖)programs. At California
and Arizona's Condor Recovery Project, the caretakers use hand puppets shaped like condors (h膚)to raise the
chicks, while researchers at the Hetaoping Research and Conservation Center in Western China are dressed in panda
suits to raise the severely endangered animals.
Rick is planning to keep his young “kids” around for a while. Once they get a little older,he plans to take them
over to a neighborhood lake where they will hopefully learn to mix with their own kind. 【语篇解读】一群小鸭子认了一位男子作妈妈,原来鸟类会把它们出生时看到的第一个东西认作是妈妈。

This story explores the effects of rituals (仪式)on our senses, starting with a ritual that comes just before we cut
the cake 一 singing Happy Birthday to You. We have a question: If you did not sing Happy Birthday to You or blow
out the candles, would the cake taste any different?
There's actually very little research into the effects that rituals have on our lives. Recently Francesca Gino and
Kathleen Vohs have just completed the first strict study on the effects that rituals have on eating. They ran a series of experiments. In one of them, they gave volunteers chocolate bars and asked some of the
volunteers to perform a ritual. They told the other volunteers to eat the chocolate bars exactly as they would like.
When people engaged in rituals 一 very simple rituals 一 we saw that, in fact, what they tasted was more flavorful,
they enjoyed it for longer and they would be willing to pay a higher price for what they just ate. They ran the same experiment with carrots, and they found the same thing happened. So across the board, rituals
seem to increase expectation and make people more mindful of what they are eating.
So the researchers said,“Is it possible that it's just performing some kind of physical activity before you eat that
makes the difference?,,They had people perform random physical gestures, and they found that didn't make any
difference. They also found that watching someone else perform a ritual did not have any effect. You had to do it. And
it was doing the ritual every single time that gave the ritual its power.
This is fascinating, because,of course,we have rituals in all areas of life.
People have morning habits. They have evening habits. There are habits of religion. We could go on and on. In sports, for example, rituals soothe(抚慰)us,and calm us down. After suffering a personal loss, performing a ritual
helps you regain a sense of control. 【语篇解读】生活中我们经常参加或者举行各种各样的仪式。但是,仪式究竟起什么作用呢? ( )41. The researchers conducted experiments aiming to find . A. why people like rituals B. what makes rituals special

The recent survey shows that very few teens participate in common household chores in the UK this year. Here
are the survey's findings : More than three quarters of teenagers aged between 11 to 16 have yet to load a washing
machine. Around 75 percent of them are strangers to bathroom cleaning. Around 63 percent of them do not iron the
clothes and many have no idea even how to do it. The study shows that more than 35 percent of teenagers have never
cooked a meal, and that 92 percent of them have never done the household shopping.
The result is obviously representing the fact that parents are taking on all housework at home. Teenagers aged
between 11 to 16 do not handle things by themselves. And the researcher said that it was hoping to focus the obvious
difference on the life of average teenagers and their parents in the UK. In the past years, parents carried out similar
household chores when they were five years old.
This survey has taken place in the UK, and it's easy to imagine that the trend already exists in other countries around the world.

According to the survey, few teenagers in the UK help with doing household chores, which their parents began to
do from an early age. So it's almost the same with other countries.
Why do the kids seldom do household chores? Probably many parents take on all the housework, for fear that
their children have no time for schoolwork. On the other hand, the less housework these kids do,the more unwillingly they will do the chores.
In fact, doing housework has quite a few advantages. It can help the kids learn more about responsibility and the
basic skills, with which they will live independently in life. Besides, the kids can improve their self-respect and family
values by doing housework.
How do parents encourage kids to do housework? To begin with, small and frequent housework can be given to
your kids. Then you should always praise them if they do a good job. Finally you must set a good example to them,
which is the best way to achieve your aims.

I am a 26-year-old woman,working as a flight attendant. t'm a realist,so I am clear that I am never going to be

Everybody thinks we just serve food and soda. However, the planning is incredible. The safety training is hard.
Caring for 49 people in business class in 90 minutes takes a carefully-planned machine. I had a roommate who was a

workers lose a family member the day before a trip and just pull themselves together. At the end of a 14-hour flight, it's like,“It was really nice helping you,but t'm ready for you to get off the plane. ” Those last 15 minutes can be the
longest 15 minutes of your life. You can't wait to turn off the flight attendant's voice and get something to eat without someone saying,‘‘Excuse me. ”

Recently, I feel burdened when facing the fact that I have to respectively invite so many people to dinners. As
everyone knows, western people will go Dutch while having a meal in a restaurant, while the Chinese don't go Dutch,
they will pay the bill and check out generously. Western people don't often entertain guests, while the Chinese often
invite friends to dinner, and this is a part of so-called Chinese table culture. I really want to say t'm tired of this kind of culture.
Western people eat for health, while the Chinese eat for friendship. Western people advocate individualism and
independence, so they express that respect for each other's independence by means of going Dutch. The Chinese like
making friends, and they value the interpersonal relationship very much. There are lots of folk proverbs in China, such
as “Things are easier to handle if you have many friends. ” As we can see, the position of a friend is so important in the
mind of the Chinese. The reason why the Chinese don't go Dutch is that they don't want to destroy their friendship.
Traditionally, going Dutch is considered mean in China, which is unfavorable to keep harmonious interpersonal relat=onsh=p.
Generally speaking,in China, when a person invites you to dinner,he may well pay the bill. The purposes of
invitation vary. For example,if you do him a favor,he will invite you to dinner in order to express gratitude to you,
certainly,he will pay the bill. Then suppose t'm a manager of a company, and you are the manager of another
company,I want to talk about business with you,and I will say: “Let's go out to dinner together!” Certainly,I will
pay the bill. My purpose is to promote the cooperation between our two companies.
The fact that the Chinese don't go Dutch and treat someone to dinner may not only be a kind of custom, but also
develops into a social gathering means for different purposes, I don't know, maybe it's to repay a favor,or to ask
someone to do a favor, and so on so forth.

I lost my sight when I was four years old by falling off a box car and landing on my head. Now I am twenty-two.
I can vaguely(模糊地)remember the brightness of sunshine and what red color is. It would be
wonderful to see again,
but a calamity can do strange things to people.
tt occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn't been blind. I believe in life
now. I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply, otherwise. I don't mean that I would prefer to go
without my eyes. I simply mean that the loss of them made me appreciate the more what I had left.
Life,I believe, asks a continuous series of adjustments to reality. The more readily a person is able to make these
adjustments, the more meaningful his own private world becomes. The adjustment is never easy, but I was lucky. My
parents and my teachers saw something in me — a potential to live — which I didn't see,and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.
The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. That was basic. If I hadn't been able to do that,I
would have collapsed($“iH) and become a chair rocker on the front porch(门廊)for the rest of my life. When I say
belief in myself I am not talking about simply the kind of self-confidence that helps me down an unfamiliar staircase
alone. That is part of it. But I mean something bigger than that: an assurance that I am,despite imperfections,a real, positive person; that somewhere in the sweeping, complicated pattern of people there is a special place where I can make myself fit.
tt took me years to discover and strengthen this assurance. It had to start with the most elementary things. I had
to learn my limitations. tt was no good to try for something I knew at the start was wildly out of reach because that
only invited the bitterness of failure. I would fail sometimes anyway but on the average I made progress.

The Chinese art of paper cutting has a long history. The earliest paper cutting was found in China 1,500 years
ago. The United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization has recognized the art, called Jianzhi! on
its Intangible Cultural Heritage (非物质文化遗产)list. But J ianzhi is at risk of disappearing. Voyo Woo,a Chinese
immigrant to the US,hopes to bring the art back to life.
Voyo Woo loves paper cutting. And she works hard to celebrate the ancient art form. On a recent Saturday,Ms. Woo
held a paper cutting show at a shopping center near Washington. She demonstrated the art to crowds for hours at the center.
Voyo Woo began to study the art of J ianzhi as a 14-year-old girl in her hometown in
southeastern China. She said
all the students at school had to learn the art. But she developed a special love for it,so her teacher gave her extra
training after class. Later, she won second prize in a national painting and handwriting competition. Ms. Woo came to
the US after she finished college in 2008. Soon after, she became involved in an event to support and expand
understanding of Chinese paper cutting. She has been invited to demonstrate the art at a wide collection of events. She
has also shown her skill at famous museums like Sackler art galleries in Washington. Ms. Woo says paper cutting
represents Chinese cultural values, history and stories of people's lives. She uses the art as a tool to present Chinese
culture to people who know little about it.
Ms. Woo placed examples of her art around her as she demonstrated paper cutting at the shopping center. Some
shoppers, like Ann Russ, took part in a workshop. Ms. Russ was struck by the finely detailed nature of the work. She
said it put her at ease. Voyo Woo says Chinese art is for all people. “It is amazing how Chinese art can echo with
people from other cultural backgrounds.,,

In china, people believe that, at the beginning, the tiger and the cat were friends, and the cat was much smarter
than the tiger. The cat learned the physical skills quickly, and the tiger was always behind. Gradually, the tiger had to
learn from the cat, and the cat was patient to teach the tiger. Day after day, month after month, finally, the tiger
could also run, jump, roll, grasp, tear, and strike as well as the cat.
One summer afternoon, the cat was taking a nap as the tiger sitting nearby. Looking at the cat,the tiger suddenly
thought, why should he keep befriending with such a small animal since he had already learnt all the skills from the
cat? The evil tiger decided to kill the sleeping cat as a before dinner snack. The tiger stood up and approached the cat
cruelly. Just as this moment, the cat woke up. Opening up her eyes, the smart cat immediately realized what the tiger
was trying to do and swiftly jumped onto a nearby tall tree and climbed to the top branch.
The tiger thought he had already learned every skill from the cat. But he never knew that the cat had hidden the

Having learnt many skills from the cat, the unthankful tiger wanted to eat it. Without teaching the tiger to climb,
the cat escaped the tiger by climbing a tall tree in time.
In our life, there really are some persons like the tiger, who always take others' help or care for granted and never
have grateful hearts to the people around. A person who is not grateful, even rich, is still a poor man, because he will
gradually lose friends and all the care and love from others.
There is an old saying in China, “A drop of water in need shall be returned with a spring in deed.,,Being grateful
is a life attitude, and it means to show the benefits of gratitude and giving back to the others. We should be grateful
because if you are grateful to the life, the life will give you the sun and if you are not grateful, maybe you could
eventually get nothing at all !
Anyone who lives in this world can hardly survive without others' help. Take us as an example. If there is no help
from parents, relatives, teachers or friends, we wouldn't go so far today. As a student, the best way to show our
gratitude is to study hard and have good qualities, and try our best to do something to help others.

Some people really don't like to be left alone with their thoughts. For example, some people taking part in a new
study preferred to receive an electric shock rather than spend 15 minutes alone in a room with nothing to do. “The
human mind wants to engage with the world, even,it appears,if that involves pain,” Timothy Wilson concludes. He
is a psychologist who works at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
The brains of mammals evolved or changed slowly over generations to watch for dangers and opportunities. “Only
humans evolved the ability to think,,,he says. ‘‘Still, people can become uncomfortable controlling their own
thoughts. ” They may not be able to guide those thoughts in a pleasing or comforting direction. And that may help
explain the popularity of meditation. It's a process in which people learn to control their thoughts and benefit from
quiet contemplation (沉思).
For its new study,Wilson's group recruited (招募)146 college students. The researchers asked each student to
sit alone in a room at their lab without any devices, such as cellphones. This solitude lasted for 6 to 15 minutes.
Most participants said they not only had trouble concentrating but also found the experience unpleasant. The
researchers then asked 44 of these people to sit alone at home, too. Again, the students had the same reaction as they
had in the lab. They found the experience very uncomfortable.
But here's the shocker 一 quite literally. The scientists asked 18 men and 24 women to sit quietly and just think
about anything. Their quiet, alone time lasted for entire 15 minutes. But in this experiment, the participants could
give themselves a painful electric shock if they wished. That shock, though, would not make their participation in the
experiment end any earlier. Still, 12 men and 6 women chose to receive a shock, rather than just continue to sit in silence.
Psychologist Jonathan Schooler of the University of California, Santa Barbara, did not work on the new study. He
says its findings point out how many people find it unpleasant to reflect on issues by themselves. They'd rather suffer
pain than bear quiet time alone.

Singles' Day falls on every November 11th. No one is quite sure exactly who first thought it up! and the most
widely-accepted story is that it emerged from the dorms of Nanjing University in 1993 when four single male students
got together to discuss how to break free of the loneliness of single life. One suggested that because of the ones in the
date, November 11 would be a good day to organize activities for singles.
Singles' Day, started by a small group of friends, gradually grew into something like the anti-Valentine's Day, a
day China's single young people could use as an excuse to get together and have fun together. Originally about being with friends and having fun, now Singles' Day is about shopping 一 mostly online shopping.
How did this happen? it's a long story, but the short answer is Alibaba.
By the late 2000s, most of China's Internet users were familiar with Singles' Day. There might have been some
small shops online and offline offering sales on that day earlier, but no major company until Alibaba launched its first
Singles' Day online sale in 2009. In that first year,Alibaba was the only major ecommerce company to offer a sale, and it featured
just 27 brands
offering discounts via its Tmall marketplace. The sale was definitely successful, but it wasn't enough to redefine the holiday on its own.
In the following year,Alibaba went bigger, offering more brands and deeper discounts. But other companies had
noticed the potential of the 2009 sales bonanza and decided to follow suit. Ecommerce platforms like JD had their first
major Singles' Day sales in 2010,and overnight Singles' Day went from a Tmall sale to something that was beginning
to look like Cyber Monday in some western countries.
Over the next few years, Alibaba, JD, and other Chinese ecommerce players all expanded their one-day
discounts, and sales grew exponentially(以指数方式).On Singles' Day in 2012,Alibaba's marketplaces,Taobao and
Tmall, did about $3 billion in sales. In 2013 that number nearly doubled, and Chinese shoppers had obliterated
America's Cyber Monday spending records in just the first few hours of the sale. And it's only getting bigger.

tt was in senior high school that I got to know a friend,Mike, who always got a full scholarship. His father had been dead for years and his mother worked as a waitress in a restaurant. I ran home excitedly and asked my mother whether I could lend Mike one of my shirts. To my surprise, she turned down my request. I felt so depressed that I yelled at her, saying that as a real friend, I’d rather share everything I had with Mike, my intimate friend. The author's friend, Mike, was from a poor family. To attend the author's birthday party, he had to borrow a shirt from the author. At first, the author's mother disagreed but finally supported and took pride in her son.
The author did what he should do for his true friend. He shows selflessness and caring, which are important to genuine friendship,I think. As the famous saying goes,“A friend in need is a friend indeed”. Real friends ought to help each other when being in trouble. In addition, friends should show respect for and have confidence in each other. It is unacceptable to judge a friend by appearance or economic conditions.
To maintain lasting friendship, friends are supposed to live in harmony and treat each other sincerely and equally.
More importantly, friends should share happiness and sorrow together. Above all, never should they betray each other.
